The man Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly wants to bring in as Manchester United's next sporting director is currently available for hire.
Paul Mitchell, who has spent the last three years as Monaco's sporting director, stepped down down amid sweeping changes to the Ligue 1 club's hierarchy. Billionaire Ratcliffe, who is still in the running to become the next United owner, is a big fan of Mitchell and will consider making an approach for him should his takeover bid succeed.
Mitchell spoke to Chelsea when the Blues were on the hunt for a sporting director following Todd Boehly's arrival last year, though they ended up hiring Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, who have taken on dual role, instead. The 42-year-old has also been linked with the sporting director vacancy at Liverpool.

Following his departure from Monaco, the club released a statement crediting Mitchell was helping to "revitalize the club’s sporting policy by implementing a number of changes, including qualification for the French Cup final (2021) and two European qualifiers in three seasons (2021 and 2022).
"Recently, Paul Mitchell has been involved in ensuring a successful transition of the new team, leaving the club with solid foundations capable of achieving good results in the future. The Club would like to thank Paul Mitchell for his commitment and wish him all the best in his future endeavours."

Prior to joining Monaco, Mitchell worked as head of recruitment and development for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. He also spent a few years working in Tottenham's recruitment division and is credited with helping the club sign the likes of Dele Alli, Son Heung-min, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld.
He followed Mauricio Pochettino to the north London club in 2014 after working with the Argentine at Southampton as their head of recruitment. Whether his next move is one to Old Trafford is highly dependent on the resolution of the takeover sage United have been embroiled in for the best part of a year.

Recent reports state that Ratcliffe was planning to buy a minority stake rather than a full takeover of the club, with the Glazer family seemingly reluctant to sell despite putting United on the market in November 2022. Fellow takeover hopeful Sheikh Jassim is also still in the running.
