Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn’t expect Harry Maguire to be available for the Europa League final between Manchester United and Villarreal next week, but will give his captain every chance to prove his fitness for the game in Gdansk.

Maguire, who damaged ankle ligaments against Aston Villa earlier this month, raised hopes over his availability when he was seen without crutches or a protective boot on Thursday night.

But Solskjaer dampened the optimism by admitting that the England defender is still a some way off being fit.

‘He’s walking but it’s a long way from walking to running,’ said the United boss. ‘To be honest I don’t think we’ll see him in Gdansk, no, but I’m going to give him until Tuesday night and the last training session to be out there. Steadily but surely he’s improving – but ligaments take time to heal.’

Solskjaer would still expect Maguire to play a part in Poland, adding: ‘He’s a very important person in the dressing-room and a leader.

‘Before fans came back in you heard him from the stands. He wants the team to do well, he’s organising from the stands. It’s easy because it’s been so quiet. He’ll make sure everyone’s ready for the final.’

Anthony Martial is also set to miss out on the final after Solskjaer revealed that the Frenchman is unlikely to return from a knee injury in the final Premier League game at Wolves on Sunday, although Fred and Scott McTominay are fit again.
