Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told his players returning from the Euros that they will miss the start of the Premier League season should they report back to training unfit.
Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw and new signing Jadon Sancho are all set to return to training on Monday in preparation for the new campaign.
Paul Pogba and Fred are also due back after an extended summer break following their involvement with France and Brazil respectively.
Fred was part of the Brazil side who lost 1-0 against arch-rivals Argentina in the Copa America final, while Pogba’s France suffered a shock last-16 Euro 2020 exit at the hands of Switzerland.
And Solskjaer has warned his returning stars they cannot expect to start the season opener on August 14 if their fitness is not up to requirements.
“With the boys who’ve not come back yet, I’ve not got a Scooby-Doo how they are fitness wise," the United boss said.
“Everyone’s due in on Monday, they’ve got two weeks until the first game and that means it’s three weeks since their last game — Fred at the Copa America and the English finalists.
“So we’ll see how they are, what fitness levels they’re at, because it’s also down to what they’ve done during the holidays.

“I can’t just throw them in if they’re not fit enough."
United will also be boosted by the expected return of Phil Jones, following his 18-month period on the sidelines.
Jones, 29, is set to begin training this weekend.
“Hopefully Phil can get training with us and then some game-time soon.
“He’s such a professional good, lad. It’s great to see him ready to train again,” said Solskjaer.
Meanwhile, United’s pre-season friendly at Preston on Saturday has been cancelled after a “small number of positive” coronavirus cases were reported at the Premier League giants.
Next up for the Red Devils is their final pre-season fixture against Everton at Old Trafford on August 7.
United will then kick-off the new Premier League campaign at home against Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds a week later.
