Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is becoming increasingly ‘withdrawn’ while assistant manager Mike Phelan has an ‘air of resignation’ at the Manchester United training ground as pressure on both men’s jobs continues to grow.
United suffered an embarrassing defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday night as their impressive Champions League form came to an end in Turkey.
Solskjaer’s side had picked up excellent wins over Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig, but morale has been sapped by Premier League defeat to Arsenal last weekend and then the turgid loss in Istanbul on Tuesday evening.
The Red Devils are languishing in 15th in the Premier League, with just two wins from their first six games and face a perilously tricky trip to Everton on Saturday lunchtime.
Defeat at Goodison Park could leave United just one point above the relegation zone going into an international break and many believe that could be the end of the road for Solskjaer.
Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is looming large with the pressure growing on Solskjaer, and reports suggest that United players support a move for the Argentinean.
The Daily Mail reports that Solskjaer and his staff are starting to act like they are on the way out, with their demeanours changing.
The Norwegian is said to be more ‘withdrawn’ at training, as he spends less time with the players and Carrington and more with other coaches and analysts.
Assistant boss Phelan is reportedly acting with an ‘air of resignation’ as his job would certainly be in danger if Solskjaer were to leave.
The report suggests Solskjaer remains popular with players, or at least much more popular than former manager Jose Mourinho, but there is clearly an underlying problem due to the remarkable inconsistencies in performance.
Solskjaer will need to produce an impressive display against Everton or his job will be under serious threat.
