Steven Gerrard plays down chances of Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour signing for Rangers

Steven Gerrard has played down the chances of Rangers moving for Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour, despite admitting to being impressed by the midfielder’s showings this year.

Gilmour, 19, stepped out for the Blues six times in the Premier League and three times in the FA Cup last season, and – though he is yet to do so in either competition this term – he has made two Champions League appearances in 2020/21.

But, while the midfielder’s showings have caught the eye of Gerrard, the Rangers boss is not planning on bringing the Scotland Under-21 international back to his home country.

“There’s always a lot of paper talk, there’s always a lot of speculation about a lot of players,” Gerrard said.

“From what I see from afar, I think Billy Gilmour is pretty settled at Chelsea. He has obviously had an injury. Every time I listen to Frank [Lampard] he’s really happy with the player.

“He’s a fabulous little player, but there’s been no contact between the clubs or the managers.

“I know Frank extremely well,” Gerrard said of his former England team-mate. “I know his coaching staff extremely well, I think that’s just people putting two and two together and looking for stories.

“There’s nothing in it from our side, but what I will say is he is a fabulous little player and we wish him well.”

Gilmour suffered a knee injury in July but returned in November and featured in Chelsea’s Champions League group-stage games against Sevilla and Krasnodar this month.

The 19-year-old only had a five-minute cameo in the 4-0 win at Sevilla but played the full 90 in the 1-1 home draw against Krasnodar, which gave Lampard’s side the point needed for them to top Group E ahead of the Spanish club.
