Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard shared a bottle of wine with Hollywood royalty Will Ferrell in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
Gerrard is currently enjoying some down time with his family in California and was joined by the Anchorman actor in a smart Beverly Hills restaurant. The 42-year-old is no stranger to LA, having spent a year playing for LA Galaxy before he retired from playing in 2016.
But the picture he posted to his 10.2million Instagram followers on Wednesday morning still caused many to double-take. Gerrard is shown with a wide grin on his face, sitting across the table from Ferrell, in Wally's Beverly Hills, a famous Hollywood haunt.
"As ye do,” Gerrard captioned the snap, alongside an emoji of a glass of red wine. As you might expect for such a random picture, it has gone down well, with over 135,000 likes at the time of writing and plenty of comments.
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright replied: "That looks like fun." Fellow pundit Jermaine Jenas added: "Quality." Gerrard’s former Liverpool team-mate Robbie Keane and rugby icon Ugo Monye both wrote: "Class."
American actor Ferrell, who has starred in films like Stepbrothers and Elf, may look like a bizarre dinner companion for Gerrard, but he is well-connected to the football world. Ferrell is a Chelsea fan and is one of the co-owners of MLS side LAFC.
The 54-year-old was also at Wembley Stadium last month to watch support friends Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as their Wrexham side narrowly lost to Bromley in the FA Trophy final.
If his Instagram activity is anything to go by, Gerrard certainly seems to be enjoying himself in LA. A previous post showed him, his wife Alex and their daughter Lourdes with some friends at Javier's Cantina in the city, while another snap showed him relaxing on a lilo in a swimming pool.
Gerrard will have to return to Birmingham soon enough to take his squad away on a pre-season tour to Australia. Villa are set to jet off Down Under in July, with matches scheduled in Queensland and Western Australia. Villa will play Leeds United, A-League side Brisbane Roar in the Queensland Champions Cup before facing Manchester United in the ICON Festival of Football.
