Luis Suarez enjoyed a decorated six-year Barcelona career; 13 major trophies say that much. But his relationship with the Catalan giants risked turning toxic when they hesitated to let him leave for La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid in 2020.

Suarez looked to leave Barcelona after it became apparent that he didn’t feature in then-new manager Ronald Koeman’s plans in the summer of 2020.

In September 2020, the Uruguayan icon reportedly agreed to sacrifice a percentage of the money Barca owed him in the final year of his contract to become a free agent.

The Nou Camp outfit indicated they would let him leave under those terms, but not to a group of clubs.

Manchester United joined Real Madrid, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain among the banned destinations, though a switch to Old Trafford was always unlikely, given his Liverpool connections.

However, Atletico were absent, which sparked a row when Barcelona attempted to perform a U-turn when Suarez reached an agreement with Los Rojiblancos.

Reports claimed Barca hesitated to terminate the now-36-year-old’s contract to prevent a move to Atletico.

They were not keen on strengthening a direct rival after previously being haunted by David Villa’s same move in 2013.

Suarez’s discontent reached a stage where he was said to be considering holding a press conference with his lawyers to force a Barcelona exit.

But it didn’t come to that, and just days after news of the hitch emerged, Suarez joined Atletico on a two-year contract.

Barcelona received around £5.5million for the deal, but it didn’t help the sour taste when Suarez helped fire Atletico to the La Liga title that season.

In July 2022, he departed Madrid, returning to his boyhood club Nacional on a free transfer.

He played in Uruguay for the remainder of the season before joining Brazilian outfit Gremio in December, being unveiled to over 30,000 fans.

Suarez netted a hat-trick on his debut in a 4-1 win against Sao Luiz and continues to entertain South American crowds.
