Ten Hag’s unseen ‘building blocks’ are key behind Man Utd’s new-found success

Erik ten Hag has brought order to chaos at Manchester United, says Tim Howard.

The Red Devils look firmly on an upward trajectory after an impressive few months.

United secured glory in the Carabao Cup last weekend. They are also vying for a top-three finish and remain in the Europa League and FA Cup.

And former United goalkeeper Howard reckons the Dutch chief has shaken things up behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

"It's all about the discipline with him – but that's what we don't see with Ten Hag," he said.

"He's soft spoken, he's quiet and we're wondering what that fire looks and feels like. Discipline is a fundamental building block.

"We know he can win things and play good football, he did that at Ajax. But he's also got his signings right.

"Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro, they've been rocks and stalwarts for this team. The big decisions – that go in line with discipline – he's got right.

"Cristiano Ronaldo, getting him out of the club, also taking Jadon Sancho out of the squad and making him train on his own. Those are very big calls for a manager to make and he's got every one right."

Marcus Rashford bagged a meagre five goals in all competitions last season as United finished sixth in the Premier League. But the England ace has been in stunning form this term and his strike against Newcastle at Wembley took his tally to 25.

Howard, who made over 400 Premier League appearances, believes Ten Hag's man management has played a key role.

"You see Rashford attacking defenders with reckless abandon," he added. That's the point about getting your arm around him and giving him confidence.

"It's because of that confidence he's succeeding."
