Arsenal and Atletico Madrid could reach agreements over two separate transfers this week.
The Gunners are keen to reduce the number of players in their squad before the window closes in October, and Lucas Torreira could be the first to leave after falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta.
That agreement could give Arsenal the funds they need to make an offer for Thomas Partey, with the Spanish side keen to keep the two deals independent so they can get their requested fee.
The latest update on their respective futures suggest that Atletico are looking at an initial loan deal, which would not allow the Premier League side to sanction the spend.
Sky Sports have reported that Arsenal need some incoming cash to fund their £45m move for Partey, and need to agree a permanent deal or an initial loan with an obligation to buy.
The report adds that Atletico would rather not commit to the payment, and that a deal with the Gunners for Torreira would clear the way for their Ghana international.
Arteta spoke to the media on Friday ahead of their back-to-back visits to Anfield next week, but he refused to talk about specific targets when asked about links to Jorginho.
He said: “We are still open to improve. We are looking for different options depending on what happens with our players here.
“We are getting prepared just in case we need to do something.”
Before adding of their fixtures: “It's normally difficult enough to play the same team in four days and for the players as well to adapt.
“The first game has a big impact on the second one and it's very tough to beat the same opponent twice in that short period.
“When you talk about Liverpool that challenge is much bigger. I just want to focus on Monday. Let's try to get the best possible preparation against them, go there and most importantly have the belief that we can go there and win.

“We all have to believe we can do that.”
Before adding: “It’s really important to start well but it’s important what happens after 20, 30, 80, 90 minutes.
“It's a team that is really consistent in its performance, able to constrain the opponent to do very little against them and can dominate long periods of games.
“You have to be able, when you have the right opportunities, to be ruthless. You have to do that and as well you have to be able to suffer for periods. You know and you have to expect that they’re going to have those periods.”
