Arsenal are in talks with Atletico Madrid over a deal for Thomas Partey, according to the midfielder’s father.
Reports have claimed that Mikel Arteta has been impressed with Partey’s performances for Atletico and has urged Arsenal’s hierarchy to make a move at the end of the season.
The Ghana international has a a €50 million (£47m) release clause in his current deal with Atletico, and the Spanish club are looking to tie him down to a new contract which would see his clause raised to €100m(£93m).
But Partey’s father, Jacob, has now revealed that Arsenal are attempting to negotiate a fee with Atletico before a new contract can be signed.
‘I called my son after hearing the rumours and he told me that the rumours are true,’ Jacob Partey, who was speaking in Ghana, told Tru FM’s ‘Sports World Show’.
‘He told me they are holding talks between him and Arsenal.
‘It all depends on the offer Atletico are demanding. If he goes to Arsenal fine, they have a lot supporters in Ghana.
‘I will be happy if he decides to move to Arsenal. What they are discussing now is how Atletico will release him.’
Meanwhile, Arteta admitted last week that Arsenal are keeping their options open ahead of the transfer window as the club’s final Premier League position will have a major impact on who they will sign.
‘We have a lot of meetings to try and plan the season,’ said the Arsenal manager.
‘We might have one, two, three different scenarios and we have to be prepared for all of them.
‘I’m not a person that likes improvising a lot so we have to know that the circumstances can change every week and we have to be prepared as a club to react to that and adapt.’
