Tottenham are eyeing a Mauricio Pochettino return after Antonio Conte's departure – less than a month into his tenure.

The Italian was appointed as Nuno Espirito Santo's successor earlier this month after a shoddy start to the season.

It follows a worrying trend at the club where they have been in a steady decline since Pochettino's dismissal in 2019.

Jose Mourinho was brought in but their standing in the Premier League faltered as they missed out on Champions League football last season.

Instead, in somewhat embarrassing fashion, they have had to make do with qualification into the inaugural Europa Conference League – a European competition for those that miss out on the Europa League.

Conte's appointment has been hailed as a major coup, though, after success with the likes of Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

All were in dire situations prior to his arrival before going on to win their domestic leagues.

However, Tottenham chiefs are already planning for life after the ex-midfielder and have identified Pochettino as the man to replace him.

That is despite a withering review of his management by club chairman Daniel Levy, who said "extremely disappointing results" were the reason behind his decision to sack him initially.

According to The Athletic, Spurs are hoping that whatever happens with Conte – he brings them back to the stage where they were at under Pochettino.

The Argentine had taken them to the Champions League final in 2019, which they lost to Liverpool, but marked a significant rise for the club during his stewardship.

When Conte does eventually leave, whenever that might be, Tottenham are keen to make sure that they are in the right position to bring Pochettino back.

Whether the former Southampton manager will want to is another matter with plenty of offers on the table.

He is currently managing Paris Saint-Germain and is contracted until 2023 with the French giants reluctant to listen to any offers for their coach.
