Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has apparently asked Spurs transfer chief Fabio Paratici to sign Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana. The shot-stopper was linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer.

Onana hasn’t played a game since January after he was handed a suspension for testing positive for banned substance furosemide.

The 25-year-old had the diuretic in his urine after giving an out-of-competition sample just over a year ago.

He said he had taken some of his wife’s medicine after feeling unwell, apparently mistaking it for aspirin.

Onana was originally banned for a year, but that was reduced to nine months on appeal.

The keeper has now served his ban but hasn’t appeared for Ajax since he kept a clean sheet in his team’s 3-0 victory over AZ Alkmaar last season.

Onana was named on the bench for Ajax on Sunday, however, as the Dutch side played out a goalless draw with Go Ahead Eagles.

And the Cameroon international has his work cut out if he is to force his way back into Erik ten Hag’s plans.

Ajax have conceded just two league goals this season and have kept a staggering 10 clean sheets in their opening 12 Eredivisie games.

But incredibly, Ajax are only level on points at the top of the league with PSV.

Onana’s contract at Ajax expires next summer and he is unlikely to sign a new deal in the Netherlands.

Conte could therefore offer the player a contract in England and get a deal done at the start of next year ahead of a summer arrival.

Tottenham’s current keeper Hugo Lloris is, himself, out of contract at the end of the season.

And, according to 90mins, Conte has told Paratici he wants a new keeper, whether the France World Cup winner stays or not.

Conte is keen to have a goalkeeper who can play the ball out from the back, and that is one of Lloris’ main limitations.

If Spurs are to sign Onana, they could face stiff competition from Serie A side Inter Milan, as well as north London rivals Arsenal.

Inter’s current keeper Samir Handanovic turned 37 in the summer and is another player coming to the end of his contract.

Arsenal, meanwhile, reportedly chased a deal for Onana ahead of this campaign.

But no transfer materialised and the Gunners instead signed Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United.

Ramsdale has been in scintillating form for Mikel Arteta’s side – and Onana is unlikely to settle for a place as the Englishman’s back-up.

So if Spurs can better Inter’s offer, they could land their man.
