Cristian Romero and Tottenham new boy Richarlison appear to have buried the hatchet after an awkward reunion in front of their team-mates.

The Brazil international became Antonio Conte's fourth summer signing after completing a move worth up to £60million from Everton earlier this month. Richarlison followed Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster, and Ivan Perisic through the door, with Clement Lenglet since joining on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating the forward's first meeting with Romero as team-mates, given their chequered past for both club and country. It is safe to say the pair allowed their rivalry between Brazil and Argentina to spill over into the Premier League.

The animosity is understood to have begun after a World Cup qualifier between the South American giants was suspended in September last year after just seven minutes. Officials stormed the pitch as Romero and three of his team-mates were accused of breaching Covid-19 regulations by not isolating for the required fortnight.

Richarlison took the opportunity to aim a swipe at Brazil's historic rivals in the aftermath, posting a simple message on Instagram which read 'Brazil 1-0 Argentina'. This post came shortly after the former Watford star aimed another cheeky jibe at Argentina following their group-stage exit at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Richarlison then followed these social media swipes with a heavy challenge which left Romero on the turf during Everton's goalless draw with Tottenham at Goodison Park in November last year. The forward would himself end up on the ground following a confrontation with the defender, with both players being booked as a result.

Romero would not have to wait long to exact his revenge. Conte's side thrashed the Toffees in the return fixture in March, and the defender enjoyed the bonus of leaving Richarlison crumpled in a heap after a thumping early challenge.

The centre-back was somewhat lucky to remain on the pitch after only being issued with a yellow card in the 5-0 win. Romero then responded with his own social media jibe, posting a personalised celebration of the victory which featured Richarlison laying on the turf along with the scoreline.

After much anticipation, Tottenham shared footage of the pair's awkward canteen greeting. Richarlison rose out of his seat to shake the hand of Giovani Lo Celso, before sharing a similar embrace with Romero.

The gesture was not lost on the pair's team-mates, with cheers ringing out as both players look around with grins on their faces. Lucas Moura and Eric Dier are both seen to be laughing and clapping, before Richarlison and Romero take their seats.

Reflecting on his decision to sign, Richarlison told the club's website: "I remember when I was in Brazil and the offer from Tottenham came I couldn't believe it. And after I signed the contract, even more so because it feels like a dream.

"When I arrived here it gave me chills in my stomach to see my new teammates and a new home. I hope to make history here in this shirt. And now it's about working with the great coach I have, with my great teammates too and make history in that shirt."
