Tottenham’s discipline will be tested against Manchester United on Wednesday night, with three players just two bookings away from facing a one-match ban. Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Harry Kane are all going to be instructed to tread carefully with so many fixtures on the horizon.

Spurs have made an impressive start to the season, winning seven of their opening 10 matches of the Premier League campaign and losing just once. They sit third in the table and are level on points with Manchester City (23), with fierce rivals Arsenal topping the table on 27 points.

But Antonio Conte’s side could struggle in the coming weeks if they begin to be impacted by suspensions. His team have been issued 19 yellow cards so far this season, the seventh-most in the league, as well as one red.

Tottenham average 10.7 fouls per match, which would certainly indicate why fears are growing that they could be without several key players in the future. Kane would be the biggest miss for Spurs, with the England international the club’s top scorer with nine goals in 10 appearances.

Bentancur has been significant in Spurs’ success so far this season too, with the Uruguayan forming a strong partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the centre of the park. The duo have impressed with their attacking output but also by how they have shielded their defence well.

Conte has also adopted a 3-5-2 formation recently and enjoyed success in that system, with the switch giving his side enough control in midfield to secure a 2-0 win over Everton last weekend. The addition of Bissouma, coming on in place of the injured Richarlison, gave Bentancur and Hojbjerg the licence to roam forward, with the latter scoring Spurs’ second.

However, Bissouma could find himself sidelined once again if he receives two more bookings. The former Brighton playmaker has had to be patient when waiting for opportunities in north London, though his recent performances could see him work his way into Conte’s plans more permanently.

Speaking about how his side have performed this season, Conte said: “I think compared to last season, you can see more stability in this team. In every game, we go into the pitch with the will, with the desire that there is the possibility to get three points and win the game.

“Then it can happen in one game, like Arsenal, that you can lose but in every game, I think my players feel the possibility to try to fight to get three points. This has to be our target in every game to make difficult the life of our opponent.”
