Tottenham face transfer decision as Barcelona make contact over summer move

Tottenham have reportedly been contacted by Barcelona about signing Tanguy Ndombele, while Paris Saint-Germain have also launched an enquiry. Spurs splashed out a club-record £55million fee to sign Ndombele from Lyon last summer.

Mauricio Pochettino had hoped the Frenchman would provide some steel to his midfield and he initially made a strong start to life in north London with a goal and assist in his first two games.

But things soon started to unravel for the 23-year-old with Pochettino admitting it could take up to two years before Ndombele settles in the Premier League.

He was in and out of the starting line-up under Pochettino before the Argentine was sacked in November.

Pochettino’s replacement though clearly had little patience for Ndombele as Mourinho regularly left him out of the starting line-up.

Prior to the Premier League being suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak, Mourinho publicly slammed Ndombele leading to reports the midfielder might be shipped out after just a year at the club.

Since football in England has restarted, Ndombele has been left on the bench in both of Tottenham’s games so far.

Mourinho has preferred Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Giovani Lo Celso while Dele Alli and Erik Lamela have played in the more attacking role.

With games coming thick and fast, Mourinho will likely have to call upon Ndombele at some stage as the club battles to claim a European qualification spot.

But Tottenham have already had contact from a couple of clubs interested in a deal to sign Ndombele this summer.

According to The Athletic, both PSG and Barcelona have expressed an interest in signing the France international.

Barcelona, it is claimed, would only be able to afford an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy next year.

However, the report goes on to insist Tottenham have no interest in selling Ndombele at this moment in time.

Having spent a record sum on signing him just a year ago, Tottenham’s hierarchy are hopeful the midfielder will come good eventually.

But former Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda has challenged Ndombele to rediscover his form that saw him in earn a big-money move to north London in the first place to regain Mourinho’s trust.

“If I spoke to him, I would tell him, ‘It’s time to step up. Prove you’re the player we signed — the same as when you were at Lyon, and do the same thing’ because we don’t yet see where all his talent is,” he told The Athletic.

“Where is it hiding? Prove that we were right to sign you and then people will shut their mouth.”
