Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho prefers not to think too much about his side’s gruelling schedule over the next month. Sunday’s Premier League opener against Everton is their first of a possible nine in 22 days as Spurs pay the price of having to enter Europa League qualification.
Carabao Cup games also add to the schedule as they will have two weeks where they have to play Tuesday, Thursday, Tuesday if they progress in all competitions.
In what looks like a full-on calendar, Mourinho will require his full squad and possibly some of his youth team too.
“If I think too much about it, I don’t know how to answer and I will get depressed. I don’t want to get depressed. I want to go to every match with a smile,” he said.
“I want to go to every match positive. But the other day I made a challenge with my boys, asking them which one of them thinks they can play all these nine matches for 90 minutes and nobody told me ‘I can’.

“So we all are very, very aware that it is impossible to do it. It is not human.
“It is a big risk in terms of our ambitions, first of all, because it is very, very possible you lose one of these matches and the part of the Premier League where you can lose and stay in competition but if you lose in the Europa League, you go out.
“If you lose in the Carabao Cup, you go out too.
“So looking at that level, it is a big risk. Injury, obviously, if everybody speaks about lots of matches in some periods, this is something unique. It has never happened, never happened.”

Tottenham injury news
Spurs could be without midfielder Giovani Lo Celso for the match against Everton
The Argentinian did not feature in any pre-season games as he was bugged by an injury carried over from the back end of last season.
“Let’s see,” Mourinho said. “He didn’t play, he didn’t play one single minute.
“He was one of the players that had to deal with some issues from pre-season.
“His condition is not the best, but Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, we need him.
“So I want to wait to see if he’s for Sunday, if he’s for Thursday. Gio is there, he can eventually play.”
Japhet Tanganga picked up a thigh injury in pre-season and will be out a few weeks.
Mourinho said: “Japhet is missing [for Sunday’s game against Everton]. He had an important injury in pre-season and he will still be away for a few more weeks.
“It’s quite an important injury in a tendon. It takes time. Young guy, no risk.”
