Tottenham ‘reach January transfer window agreement’ after Jose Mourinho left unimpressed

Tottenham: Is Jose Mourinho back to his old tricks?

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached an agreement to send Gedson Fernandes back to Benfica in the January transfer window, ending his loan spell early. Jose Mourinho was left less than impressed with the young midfielder.

Tottenham are set to offload Fernandes as soon as the January transfer window opens.

The Portuguese youngster joined Spurs in January of this year, inking an 18-month loan contract.

Much was expected of the wonderkid, who helped Portugal to win the 2016 European under-17 Championship.

But he’s failed to have any impact at all since joining the club.

Fernandes has only played 13 times in all competitions since making the switch, and it appears unlikely he will ever play for them again.

He’s only managed to make the bench once this season, but failed to get any minutes in the 1-1 draw against Newcastle.

Fernandes has only started two games for Spurs across all competitions in his time at the club.

Mourinho, who was at the helm when Fernandes’ loan was agreed with Benfica, has apparently now given up on him, according to A Bola.

Benfica boss Jorge Jesus recently admitted he believes Fernandes should never have departed for Spurs.

He said: “As for Gedson, I don’t know him very well because he never worked with me.

“Now, all these young people that Benfica have, if they don’t play in these teams, it is better to be at Benfica. In my opinion, they learn much more (if they stay).

“If they don’t play for these teams, they might as well be at Benfica. They learn much more. Florentino (Luis) left, he is not playing [in Monaco], Jota is not playing [in Real Valladolid], Tomás Tavares is not playing [Alaves].

“If you are not going to play, it is better to be here.”

Reports in Portugal claim Fernandes will be returned to Benfica in the January transfer window, as Spurs are keen to offload him.

Tottenham are expected to dip into the transfer market to improve the squad as they close in on a Premier League title race.

Numerous players are set to depart, however, with Dele Alli and Danny Rose both on the unwanted list.
