Tottenham star Emerson Royal admits he is "scared to death" of London Eye

Despite reports that he is surplus to requirements at Tottenham, Emerson Royal appears relaxed about the situation – and it is the London Eye that is actually giving him a reason to be fearful.

The Brazil international joined Spurs last summer from Barcelona in a move worth approximately £26million, but has struggled in the Premier League. Although showing glimmers of promise, Antonio Conte lost faith in the 23-year-old and brought Matt Doherty back into the frame – he also reportedly wants to sign a right wing-back this summer.

But that is not at the forefront of Royal’s mind currently. Instead, he spoke to The Times about how he is scared of the London Eye and has not conquered the iconic amusement yet.

The defender explained: “I have been only at that big Ferris wheel (London Eye), but I did not ride it. I love amusement parks, but Ferris wheels scare me to death.”

Royal does appear somewhat content at Spurs, and the former Barca man may be unwilling to depart given that he is starting to build strong friendships at the club. He also spoke about his relationship with international teammate Lucas Moura, who played a prank on the defender after he signed for Tottenham.

Royal wanted to know if he had to spend the night at Tottenham’s training ground before matches, but his lack of English skills meant that he could not understand the rules. He explained: “I knew the word ‘compulsory’ but it wasn’t there.

“So I asked Lucas, and he told me that staying at the hotel was mandatory. I could not believe it.” Understandably, Royal put on his Spurs tracksuit and began driving to the Enfield HQ before doubting what was going on and ringing Moura, who stressed that it was compulsory.

The new signing then pulled over to research the meaning of the word ‘optional’ and uncovered the prank, ringing up Moura to then give him an earful. He continued: “I returned home, cursed Lucas and never asked him anything anymore.”

It remains to be seen whether Royal’s stay in North London turns out to be a short one, or if Conte decides to give the Brazilian another chance to impress. However, there are reports that Spurs have submitted an offer for Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence, who thrived in the right wing-back role on loan at Nottingham Forest this season.
