Tottenham have been urged to forget the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann and instead re-appoint Tim Sherwood to take over from Antonio Conte. The Italian is set to part ways with the north London outfit this week once a compensation package is agreed upon, with Ryan Mason likely to take temporary charge of the side in the meantime.

A host of big names have been mentioned with replacing Conte, as a nine-man shortlist was drawn up before Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich on Thursday evening and replaced with Thomas Tuchel. Many supporters on social media feel that Nagelsmann would be the perfect hire, but ex-Spurs and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham believes that Sherwood would be an exceptional hire.

“If I was to answer the question I’d say to let him [Conte] go and bring someone else in,” Sheringham told talkSPORT. “I’d let him go now and get yesterday’s guest [Tim Sherwood] in. I would. I think you can do a lot worse than getting Tim Sherwood in.

“He’s a man who knows what he wants as a football manager. He’s had a couple of goes, he’s been sacked and he understands the game. If you listen to him talk you know he knows how football works. Football minds, he can see who is cheating, who wants the ball and who doesn’t. Get him in charge and get them in shape.”

Sherwood took charge at Spurs in 2013 following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas and lasted until the end of the season having been let go with a year left on his contract. A 4-0 defeat to Chelsea was a low point during his time at the club, before his final game in charge when he pulled a fan into the dugout, stuck his famous gilet on the supporter to coach the game.

“That guy’s an expert, seriously,” Sherwood said afterwards. “Every week he tells me what to do. So I gave him the opportunity to do the job.”

Sheringham believes that the “vibe is all wrong” at Spurs, however, and Sherwood may be the right man to fix it. “I think that the vibe is all wrong at Tottenham. There’s question marks all the time about Conte, is he staying? Is he going? He’s only been there two years and it seems to come around every three months about whether he’ll stay or he’ll go,” he added.

“He looks upset and you can’t have that because you need some sort of stability to give you the confidence that you’re there for the long run and you want to make it right.

“All I can see from what Daniel Levy has done is that he’s gone out to try and buy the best and get the best managers in. He’s had Jose Mourinho in and he’s a proven winner. He’s had Conte, a proven winner and it hasn’t happened for whatever reason.”
