Trent Alexander-Arnold is nearing a return from injury in a boost to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after missing the last three matches.

The Reds kick-start their Carabao Cup campaign against Championship hopefuls Leicester City on Wednesday evening although that is still too soon for Alexander-Arnold to be involved.

A hamstring injury suffered in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa at the start of September resulted in the right-back limping off at Anfield and subsequently withdrawing from international duty with England.

Recovery work has seen him strive to get fit before the next upcoming international break and Liverpool assistant Pepijn Lijnders explained Alexander-Arnold has returned to team training ahead of Wednesday’s cup clash.

‘Trent trained Monday with us but it was just in the rondo and the ball possession with the counter-pressing, but he was outstanding,’ Lijnders told the club website.

‘You see him instantly, of course. He is with the team training, I am not sure if he will be ready, we will see today.

‘But then if we speak about Trent we have to make a compliment to Joe Gomez because the way he played the role, played the role in his way but still being able to come inside as well, was just incredible,’ he added.

‘His level and attitude, just a big compliment to him because you are replacing one of the best full-backs in the world.

‘He did really, really well. That’s good and shows a lot about our squad as well, that we can have that,’ said the Reds assistant manager.

‘Tomorrow comes too early for [Alexander-Arnold],’ Lijnders later added at a press conference.

Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara hasn’t returned to team training and is still recovering from injury

The Liverpool vice-captain has missed recent victories over Wolves, LASK, and West Ham as Klopp’s stars continue their impressive start to the new season.

Fellow England star Joe Gomez has been deputising at full-back and has done a decent job, however, Alexander-Arnold is expected to come straight back into the starting team once he is available for selection.

However, fellow absentee Thiago Alcantara isn’t yet ready to join in with team training, but Lijnders did reveal the midfielder is recovering well.

‘He [Thiago] is in a good way, the healing process is going well so that’s the most important [thing] at this moment,’ he said.
