New Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel revealed his delight at finally being able to work with N’Golo Kante, having spent ‘many years’ trying to sign him at other clubs.

Tuchel took charge of his first game on Wednesday night as Chelsea manager, a 0-0 stalemate against Wolves at Stamford Bridge.

And while World Cup winner Kante played no part due to injury, Tuchel’s happiness at working with the Frenchman was not dampened by the result.

‘The funny thing is when you join a team in the middle of the season, I already know the likes of Kai [Havertz], Timo [Werner], Toni [Rudiger],’ Tuchel said.

‘I wanted many years to have N’Golo Kante in my team and now I have him here, also Olivier Giroud, we have a clear picture.

‘I have been following the Premier League for many years both in Dortmund and in Paris so I have a clear picture of what the guys are capable of. To find a guy like [Cesar] Azpilicueta in your office is simply amazing because in the end I am also a fan of football.’

Tuchel is going to have plenty of selection headaches going forward as he looks to breathe life back into Chelsea’s bid for a top-four finish.

He elected for a back three against Wolves but left out Kurt Zouma, while Christian Pulisic, who worked with Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund, had to make do with a brief cameo in the second half.

‘In Christian for sure I know very well what he is capable of,’ Tuchel added, when quizzed on the US international.

‘He had a big, big input, it was an unfair decision for him today to not start. I told him it was only because I know what he can bring from the bench.

‘I am not sure sure what the others can do but I know [Pulisic] can bring things for us and absolutely change it for us.’

Tuchel now goes in search of his first win as Chelsea boss as his side prepare to take on Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
