Unai Emery names seven teams better than Aston Villa despite Tottenham win

Aston Villa climbed into the top four for the first time since 2009 with an impressive 2-1 win at Tottenham on Sunday afternoon. But manager Unai Emery listed the seven clubs who are still better than them – including Spurs.

“Yes, there are seven teams who are more contenders than us to be in the top seven positions,” he insisted after Ollie Watkins had put aside his disappointing England performance to score the winner. They are Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle.

“But while we are there we will try to enjoy it and try to keep it. We will continue being demanding and being focused on each match and, of course, in 38 matches there are still a lot of things to happen.

“We have to be happy, we have to enjoy and be as well demanding. We are going to analyse this match, how much we can improve tactically and individually and try to do our work and our tasks every day.”

A worrying injury to Rodrigo Bentancur only adds to the headache for Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, whose amazing start at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could turn into their worst run for nearly 20 years if they lose to Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday. “The outcome is obviously disappointing for our fans and players,” he said.

“I thought they did a fantastic job in playing the football we want to play. Any other day it’s a game we win comfortably but it’s fine margins in football. Not happy with defeat but what you’re looking for is belief and intent with what we want to be.

“That said, we’ve got eight injuries, Bentancur nine. We lost Ashley Phillips in the week as well. We’ll get through it, it might take a while but we will get through it. I have no doubt that when we come out the other side we’ll be a very good football team.”
