United loanee Ighalo tips 'exciting' Mason Greenwood for a huge future

‘He’s doing well now but in two or three years…’: Manchester United loanee Odion Ighalo tips ‘young and exciting’ Mason Greenwood for a huge future at Old Trafford

  • Mason Greenwood has enjoyed a breakout season at Old Trafford in 2019-20
  • The 18-year-old has fired in 12 goals for Manchester United’s first-team
  • Odion Ighalo, who arrived on-loan in January, has been very impressed so far

Odion Ighalo has been hugely impressed by Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood since arriving at Old Trafford, tipping the teen for big things.

Ighalo landed in England on-loan from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua in January and has helped out as an experienced head as the Red Devils charged to top-four challenging form before lockdown.

One of the main beneficiaries of Solskjaer’s faith in youth has been 18-year-old academy graduate Greenwood, who has enjoyed a breakout season with 36 first-team appearances, contributing 12 goals.

Ighalo has made an impressive start of his own at United since arriving on-loan in January

‘He’s very young and exciting. Very good player, left and right, he can shoot and score goals,’ Ighalo said on Instagram.

‘He’s a player for the future for Man Utd. He’s doing well now but in two or three years he is going to be doing very, very well.’

Greenwood’s rapid rise through the youth ranks saw him dominate rival academy defences, blasting to 31 goals in 30 Premier League 2 appearances before stepping up to the first-team in 2019-20.

Greenwood has followed in the footsteps of Marcus Rashford but will have to wait behind him

Greenwood has been one of the biggest benefactors of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in youth

The teenager is still behind Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in the pecking order, but is showing impressive progress in following in Rashford’s footsteps.

The United front-man also broke through at 18-years-old back in 2016, scoring on his Premier League debut against Arsenal.

Greenwood has five top-flight strikes this term, and has shown he’ll provide many more given the opportunity.
