Raphael Varane has handed Manchester United a huge transfer boost after reportedly ignoring the offer of a new Real Madrid contract.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have made a £50million bid to sign Varane, but Madrid want more for the centre-back.
And United's chances of signing him were dealt a blow last week when it was confirmed that Sergio Ramos will leave the Bernabeu when his contract expires at the end of the month.
The Red Devils have also been linked with Ramos, who will be available on a free transfer – but it was thought that his departure would make it difficult to persuade Los Blancos into selling his centre-back partner.
But Madrid are now prepared to sell Varane for the right price, according to reports from Spain.
And that price may be lower than expected as the France defender stalls on signing a new contract.
Madrid have offered the 28-year-old a new deal, but he is yet to respond, according to AS.
The publication says Varane believes he has one more big contract to come at the peak his career – and may not feel he can get the deal he wants after some of his team-mates accepted reduced terms.
With the defender about to enter the final year of his current contract, Madrid risk losing him for free next summer, and he will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside Spain from January.

It was reported by the Manchester Evening News that Madrid were holding out for £80m after United made a £50m bid.
But according to AS, the Spanish club would be prepared to accept a compromise if the Premier League side were to make another offer, as they try to fund a move for Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe.
Varane is believed to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's top defensive target as the United boss seeks a long-term centre-half partner for Harry Maguire.
David Alaba will join Madrid from Bayern Munich on July 1, while Nacho and Militao are Carlo Ancelotti’s other two senior stars, with reports claiming 24-year-old ace Jesus Vallejo will also be given a chance next season.
For the most part, Varane has remained tight-lipped about his Real future, but the defender did provide an update on his situation prior to Euro 2020.
“This is not the time to talk about my future, I am focused on the selection, on this Euro, it is normal and logical to ask the question and for my part it is normal and logical to focus on the upcoming deadlines,” Varane said.
“I am focused on my goal, and now is not the time to discuss it. If I have to talk about it, it will be directly with the people concerned.”
