Victor Osimhen is understood to be among Manchester United’s top striker targets this summer and interestingly, it’s alleged the red-hot Napoli frontman already previously rejected a chance to join the club under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Nigerian striker has been among the best players in world football this season and is on the verge of securing immortality in Naples with the Partenopei on track to win their first Scudetto since the 1989/90 season.

Osimhen has struck 23 times in 28 matches in all competitions this term and added another two goals to his tally in the midweek Champions League triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt.

It means his price tag is likely to exceed the £100million mark with Osimhen keen to discuss his future at the end of the season when he is unlikely to be short of offers.

And should United launch a mega-money swoop for his services, it would hand Osimhen the chance to finally fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League – something he recently made public.

However, back in 2020, Osimhen’s brother Andrew claimed the striker had the chance to join United during his time with Lille, an opportunity he rejected out of respect for his close friend Odion Ighalo.

“It is very true that Manchester United wanted Victor but he told me something like he had too much respect for Odion Ighalo to be competing for shirts with his senior colleague,” Andrew told Complete Sports in September 2020.

“My brother holds Ighalo in high esteem and he just didn’t see himself going to Old Trafford to battle for a striking role with the highest goalscorer at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.”

Ighalo left United in January 2021, meaning the potential transfer obstacle has now been cleared.

His former links to the Premier League do not stop there either. It’s understood iconic Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger held talks with the player way back in 2015 after the U17 World Cup in Chile where Osimhen starred in attack for Nigeria, hitting 10 goals at the tournament.

After a difficult start to his senior career with Wolfsburg, he would later join Belgian side Charleroi where it soon became apparent that he was destined for the very top.

Lille made their move and Osimhen once again caught the eye as he scored a brace on his Ligue 1 debut against Nantes.

Having scored 18 goals in all competitions, the attacker would earn a big-money move to Napoli, where he simply hasn’t looked back.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Bayern Munich have also been linked with the 24-year-old, who looks highly likely to leave Serie A at the end of the current campaign.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is confident that he will be able to retain the services of both Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia come the end of the summer transfer window.

He recently said: “I am very good at making contracts, so when they come to me, they are blocked, so keeping them here won’t be difficult.

“However, never say never. Sometimes there are offers you can’t refuse, so you never know. To me, we’ll see them shine for a long time.”

Osimhen’s current Napoli contract does not contain a release clause, meaning any clubs interested in buying the frontman will have to participate in negotiations with the Italian giants.

Should Harry Kane extend his stay with Tottenham at the end of the season, Osimhen is undoubtedly the most attractive striker currently on the market.
