Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19, the Serie A club have announced.

The Italian side revealed on Monday evening that the 31-year-old Wales international, who has been linked with a return to the Premier League during the January transfer window, had returned a positive result.

The former Arsenal midfielder had struggled for game-time in Turin prior to contracting the virus, and now seems likely to leave the club.

Aaron Ramsey is the latest professional footballer to return a positive Covid-19 test

A statement on the club’s official website said: ‘Juventus Football Club announces that Aaron Ramsey has tested positive for Covid-19. The player has already been placed in isolation.’

The 31-year-old has made just one league start for Max Allegri’s side this season, and picked up two appearances from the bench.

Ramsey joined the Old Lady on a free transfer in July 2019 after spending 11 years at Arsenal.

Ex-Gunner has barely played for Juventus this season, making just one start in Serie A

He has scored six goals in 69 games at the club, but has played less than 100 minutes for Juventus this season.

The Gunners have been touted as a possible destination for their former player with relegation-haunted Newcastle and Burnley also understood to be among a host of English top-flight clubs monitoring developments.

Injuries have hampered him during his spell at Juve, where he has not started a game since the season’s opening fixture with manager Allegri having described him as ‘an outgoing player’.

Ramsey has been rumoured with a potential return to the Premier League this transfer window
