Wesley Fofana has signed a new five-year deal with Leicester and could make his first appearance of the season this week after recovering from a broken leg.
The French defender suffered a fractured fibula and damaged ankle ligaments during a pre-season friendly against Villarreal, which has stopped him making a single appearance in the current campaign.
But Leicester have still moved to tie down another of their prize assets, after also handing James Justin improved terms last month, and Fofana is edging towards a place in the squad for Thursday’s Europa Conference League meeting with Rennes.

‘It just brings the team to a new dimension,’ said Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers. ‘This is a top player, no question. I’ve got absolutely no doubt in this boy.
‘You watch the top level of the game and players have devilment. They can be the nicest guys in the world but on the field they have an edge, and Wesley has that. Like Jamie Vardy, he has no respect on the field – in the nicest possible way.
‘It was a massive loss for us when he got injured. The other guys have filled in manfully and done the best they can, but you’ve seen what happens to a team like Liverpool when they are missing Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip.
‘When we are missing Jamie Vardy and two centre-halves like Jonny [Evans] and Wesley, with all due respect to a club like us, that’s a big difference.’

Fofana could make the squad for Thursday’s Europa Conference League meeting with Rennes
Fofana joined Leicester from St Etienne in October 2020, for a fee that could rise to £36.5million. He quickly proved himself to be one of the outstanding prospects in the European game, helping the club win the FA Cup for the first time in their history.
Without Fofana, Leicester have struggled at the back this term, though have recently rediscovered a mean streak, keeping clean sheets in victories over Burnley and Leeds.
The 21-year-old’s return represents a huge boost, however, with the Conference League looking Leicester’s best route to European football next season. The winner qualifies for the 2022-23 Europa League, while Leicester remain nine points adrift of seventh-placed Tottenham in the league, despite back-to-back wins.
