West Ham are preparing to challenge Leeds in the race for Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko. The 24-year-old was one of the key players in the Shakhtar side that reached the Europa League semi-finals this summer.
Ukrainian international Marviyenko, rated at £20million, can play as a centre-back or left-back, is also on the wish lists of Everton and Wolves.
Hammers manager David Moyes has a centre-back high on his list of potential purchases during this window, with Brighton’s Shane Duffy also a contender, but Matviyenko is rated the better long-term prospect.

Moyes though has to unload players before he can buy, with Felipe Anderson, Manuel Lanzini, Jack Wilshere and Arthur Masuaku all reportedly surplus to requirements at the London Stadium.
The Hammers are also looking at a possible deal for Porto striker Moussa Marega, who is set to become a free agent next summer after turning down a new contract with the Portuguese giants. The 29-year-old has scored 60 goals in 145 games for the club.
Meanwhile, Callum Wilson wants wages of £75,000 a week before he is prepared to leave Bournemouth this summer.
The England striker is being chased by a host of Premier League clubs after the Cherries’ relegation to the Championship at the end of the season.
Newcastle were favourites to sign the 28-year-old, but the high wage demands, plus the price tag of £30m that the Cherries have placed on the striker, have stalled their moves.
Tottenham are willing to meet Wilson’s wage demands – but manager Jose Mourinho has to sell before he can buy any more players, having already signed Pierre Hojbjerg and Joe Hart, and with Wolves’ Matt Doherty about to join in a £12m deal.

Mourinho wants Wilson and has been tracking the Cherries striker all summer – but Fulham are also contenders.
The Cherries’ Colombian midfielder Jefferson Lerma is set to be the latest player to depart the Vitality Stadium after relegation, with Turkish side Galatasaray close to clinching a season long loan deal wth an option to buy.
Elsewhere, Southampton are chasing Celtic’s giant Norwegian defender Kristoffer Ajer.
Norwegian international Ajer, 22, who stands at six foot six inches tall, wants out of Celtic, and is one of the players manager Neil Lennon is prepared to let go as he rebuilds after his club’s Champions League exit at the hands of Ferencvaros this week.
West Ham and West Brom are also keen on Ajer, who would cost around £20m.
