Willian has suggested he could yet stay at Chelsea after attracting transfer interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.
The Brazilian appeared certain to leave when his contract expires at the end of the 2019/20 season and several of Chelsea’s Premier League rivals are vying to secure his signature.
But after agreeing a short-term deal to see out the remainder of the campaign with Chelsea, Willian hinted he could stay at Stamford Bridge.
‘I want to finish the season well if I go, or maybe I can stay,’ he told the club website after Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City.
‘I don’t know but what I want now is to play well and for Chelsea to finish in the top four.’
He added: ‘We know teams that come from behind want to win to go in the top four as well so we have to do our job.’
Willian scored a crucial penalty against City on Thursday to make sure of three vital points.
Chelsea are now firmly in the driving seat when it comes to qualifying for Champions League football and opened up a five-point gap between them and United.
Despite the huge win, Frank Lampard warned his players the fight wasn’t over with seven games left to play.
‘It’s a big three points for us, but we’re in a battle here,’ the Chelsea coach said.
‘It’s not going to be decided by that game. It’s a nice result that will give us confidence, but the consistency that we produce to the end of the season is what will define us this year if we are to get the finish we want to have.
‘I’m not getting carried away. We can get better. We can be better on the ball.
‘We can have more possession. It’s one of the only games in which we didn’t have the lion’s share of possession but we have to accept that tonight and be happy with the result.
‘We had to work a lot off the ball, as you do with Pep Guardiola teams and Manchester City.
‘The way the lads showed the work ethic and focus throughout the game, how dangerous we were; we had the better chances in the game.’
