Wolves boss Lopetegui makes three HT subs vs Man City – and sees team capitulate

Wolves boss Lopetegui saw his side sink without a trace after he made three substitutions at half-time against Manchester City.

The Midlanders found themselves 1-0 down at the break but still in the game after Erling Haaland had given City the lead just before the interval. But Lopetegui, clearly not altogether happy at what he had seen from his side, decided to switch things up at the break with three changes.

Former Real Madrid boss Lopetegui swapped Raul Jimenez for Matheus Cunha, Adam Traore for Pablo Sarabia and Hwang Hee-chan for Joao Moutinho in a bold triple sub to try and change the game.

Unfortunately for the Spaniard, it didn't work. Haaland doubled City's lead five minutes after half-time from the spot, before the 22-year-old completed his hat-trick four minutes later.

The Norwegian tapped home from close range after good work from Riyad Mahrez to make it 3-0 and wrap up the game. It wasn't long before Wolves fans took to social media to vent their frustration at Lopetegui's triple change.

One supporter wrote: "Lopetegui thought they deserved better than 1-0 so he made triple sub and are 3-0 down in the opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half lmfao Imagine taking off pace when you’re trying to play city lmfao, you want to put possess a Pep team?"

Someone else said: "Lopetegui’s subs were criminal." A third person commented: "Still don’t know why Lopetegui made those subs."

As another user said: "Awful subs by Lopetegui the clown. Only losing 1-0 and he makes a triple sub at HT. Took off his only attacking threat Adama a swell."

Things almost got worse for Wolves midway through the second half when Mahrez struck to make it 4-0, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Defeat leaves Lopetegui's side outside of the relegation zone only on goal difference, while City closed the gap on Arsenal at the top.
