2020 Cox Plate final field and barrier draw

The final field has been declared for the 2020 Cox Plate after the annual Breakfast with the Best session at Moonee Valley and connections of three-year-old Grandslam were relieved when their $200,000 late entry fee was accepted and the colt snuck into the field for Saturday’s $5m race.

However the shock for favourite backers when Russian Camelot came up with the outside gate and his hold on favouritism is now tenuous while it was a surprise that Buckhurst was made emergency at the expense of Grandslam.

After 15 final acceptors were declared the MVRC committee met and had to make the decision as to which horse missed out from the final field of 14 runners and after Nettoyer and Master Of Wine were confirmed acceptors it was borderline who would be filling the final spot meaning Buckhurst was made the emergency.

It wasn’t until the last minutes though that the fate of Grandslam was fully determined with connections of Nettoyer and Master Of Wine both waiting until after trackwork on Tuesday morning and it was some shock Buckhurst missed out.

Both Nettoyer and Master Of Wine raced last Saturday with Nettoyer finishing second behind Think It Over in the Craven Plate at Randwick while Master Of Wine raced on the speed before weakening from the turn to finish 10th behind Verry Elleegant in the Caulfield Cup.
