Al Galayel’s comfortable win in the Group 3 JRA Cup at The Valley has earned the import a 1.5kg penalty for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Al Galayel easily defeated a field that featured four Group 1 winners to notch his ninth win from 26 starts at The Valley.
Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter issued the 1.5kg penalty on Monday to take Al Galayel’s weight to 52.5kg for both races.
The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Al Galayel passed to Caulfield Cup ballot with his JRA Cup win to move to 47th in the order of entry for the $5 million event.
“Al Galayel has struck a rich vein of form this season winning his past three starts and his maiden Group 3 victory at The Valley on Friday night came in dominant fashion by a comfortable margin,” Carpenter said.

“It was a competitive field that Al Galayel defeated with three Derby winners, a VRC Oaks winner and last year’s Caulfield Cup placegetter Mirage Dancer among the beaten brigade which added merit to his performance.”
The 2018 Australian Derby winner Levendi also passed the Caulfield Cup ballot with his third placing. Levendi is now 40th in line for a Caulfield Cup start.
Carpenter decided against penalising the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality winner Attorney or the RM Ansett Stakes winner High Emocean.
First acceptances for the Melbourne Cup will be taken at noon on Tuesday with an updated order of entry for both races to be released soon after.
