Australia v India: Fox Cricket launch new summer jingle as Nathan Lyon joins commentary box

The return of the biggest cricket star in the world to Australia has inspired Fox Cricket to launch a new jingle from the same person who produced the legendary C’mon Aussie, C’mon campaign.

The star-studded commentary box has also been given a huge boost with Test spinner Nathan Lyon joining the team from Friday.

Allan “Jo” Johnston — one half of famed advertising gurus Mojo — has created eight jingles that Fox Sports executives hope will become synonymous with the summer of cricket.

Fox League’s Matty Johns has emerged as the surprise inspiration for the campaign.

Johns hosted a party recently and was wowed by Johnston when he tuned one of Johns’s old guitars before playing some of his legendary tunes.

John was so impressed he told Fox Sport’s executive director Steve Crawley.

With Indian sensation Virat Kohli spearheading cricket’s return this month, Crawley wanted something different to show the significance of Kohli arrival.

“It’s a jingle, not an advertisement,” Crawley said. “It’s fun. It’s cricket, summer, holidays, beach balls and swimming pools. It’s barbecues, Boxing Day and Australia Day.

“If someone from Switzerland or Germany heard it played they would think: ‘What the hell is this?’ but what it is, is something that only Australians can understand. It’s the scallywag. It’s the fun in us and the irreverence in us. It celebrates all those things in our commentary team.”

Johnston has also produced other Australian classic advertisements including I Feel Like A Tooheys, You Oughta Be Congratulated for Meadow Lea and I Can Feel A Fourex Coming on. The promotion will be launched during the Wallabies and Argentina clash on Saturday night.

Fox Cricket’s biggest stars Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee and Isa Guha feature in the catchy tune. Crawley has also commissioned Johnston to do further jingles specifically around the likes of Gilchrist, Lee, Mike Hussey and Allan Border.

“Warnie can teach you more in a half an hour commentary stint then your junior coach did in 10 years but he can make you smile at the same time,” Crawley said. “There’s a bit of the scallywag in all of us. This tone is all about scallywag and having fun. I hope people like it. We will give it to Cricket Australia and see if there is a use for them.”

Aside from hosting Kohli’s six limited over games exclusively, the Fox Cricket team will feature Lyon in the commentary box for the opening two one-day matches.

“This is the biggest summer we’ve had in Australia for a long time,” Crawley said. “We’re back to our best and we have some new stars.

“Kohli is the best player in the world and having those first six games exclusively we wanted to do something different.”
