Classy filly Four Moves Ahead is ready to prove she has what it takes to win the Golden Slipper

John Sargent, trainer of Four Moves Ahead, doesn’t subscribe to the theory fillies will struggle in the $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

“I know if Four Moves Ahead gets in a dogfight, her ears will go back and she will try her best,” Sargent said.

“Hopefully she can show the fillies are as good as or better than the colts on Saturday.”

Four Moves Ahead is the most favoured of the five fillies lining up against 10 colts and a gelding in the Golden Slipper.

She is rated at $6 in latest TAB Fixed Odds betting behind only Profiteer ($4) and Stay Inside ($5).

The numerical edge the “boys” have in the Golden Slipper has also been reflected on track this season with colts dominating the fillies when they have clashed in most of the major juvenile races, winning the Magic Millions (Shaquero), Blue Diamond (Artorius) and Silver Slipper (Home Affairs).

The colts have also run faster times on most occasions when there has been separate divisions of Slipper trials the same day – with the notable exception of February 27 when Four Moves Ahead ran 1min 10.5sec to win the Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick while O’President recorded 1min 10.99sec when taking out the Skyline Stakes the same day.

Of course, race tempo and other variables need to be factored in but Four Moves Ahead demonstrated her quality last start and goes into the Golden Slipper as the only unbeaten runner.

Four Moves Ahead went into the Sweet Embrace “only 85 per cent fit” and has continued to improve since, giving Sargent reason for optimism going into Saturday.

The Slipper washout last week means Four Moves Ahead goes into the world’s richest juvenile race without a lead-up race for a month.

But Sargent dismissed any suggestion race fitness is an issue for Four Moves Ahead as she bids to become the 29th filly to win a Golden Slipper since the race was first run in 1957.

“She is very clean winded, she hasn’t missed any work, we haven’t missed a beat since the Sweet Embrace,” Sargent said.

“Fitness is not an issue, she should be 100 per cent so it’s down to luck in running.”

Four Moves Ahead completed her Slipper preparation with a strong workout over 800m on the Polytrack at Randwick on Tuesday morning.

“Even if they had the grass track open it would be too wet and I’d use the ‘Poly’ anyway, she has galloped on it often,” Sargent said.

“Nash (Rawiller) came out at 5am to ride the filly and that was her last piece of fast work before the Slipper.

“We know she handles wet tracks and I don’t mind her barrier (10), either. She’s ready – if she is good enough, she is good enough.”
