Gerald Ryan rules out Group 1 JJ Atkins for Sinba

Co-trainer Gerald Ryan isn’t likely to swayed by the temptation of backing up promising youngster Sinba next week in the JJ Atkins Stakes regardless of what the gelding produces at Rosehill on Saturday.

The son of Xtravagant is still among the nominations for Saturday week’s $1 million Group 1 at Eagle Farm but Ryan believes other options could be more favourable if all goes well on his home track this weekend.

“At this stage we probably wouldn't back him up,” Ryan, who trains with Sterling Alexiou, said.

“It was on the radar but there is a couple of races there in a few weeks time that might suit him better.

“He will go to Saturday and then we might go to a 1500m event in a fortnight at Rosehill or there is an 1800m race at Eagle Farm a week after that.”

The 1800m event Ryan speaks of is the $125,000 Listed Tattersall’s Stakes at Eagle Farm on June 26.

But Sinba will need to be competitive in Saturday’s Bowermans Commerical Furniture Handicap (1400m) to warrant a trip north for a stakes racing debut.

Ryan is confident the $90,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase is ready to run well on his city debut after two runs at the provincials produced a win at Newcastle and third at Gosford.

“He is a lovely quiet horse that does everything right,” Ryan said.

“He is a big strong horse and I reckon you won‘t see the best of him until autumn next year.

“Whether he is Classic quality or don‘t, we won’t know until you try him so we will see what happens between now and then.

“I think he should run well on Saturday.”

Sinba is a $5.50 chance with TAB fixed odds for Saturday’s assignment where he will be ridden by in-form jockey Tim Clark.

The gelding is a $51 outsider for the JJ Atkins.

Ryan and Alexiou have a strong team set to line up on their home track with Le Vizir and Majestic Wings in race three as well as Rammstein (race five), Steely (race six) and Bottega (race eight).

Amica is an emergency in the Listed Winter Cup.
