Give him a wide berth and see how Quick he goes

It’s not often connections are happy drawing an outside barrier, but that’s the case with Mr Quickie in the Doncaster Mile at Randwick on Saturday.

“He’s a big-striding horse who needs galloping room. He drew 23, but when the emergencies go out he’ll start from barrier 19, which should ensure he’ll get that (room),” syndicate manager Wylie Dalziel said.

“You only have to look at his last run in the All-Star Mile.

“Damien Oliver got off (after finishing ninth) and said if he got galloping room in the straight, he would have been in the finish and he was only beaten 3.6 lengths.

“Ollie also said that Mr Quickie would also be best suited by drawing a middle to wide barrier.

“In fact that’s the whole story of his career. When he loses it’s usually because he doesn’t get enough galloping room.

“If Glyn Schofield can get him into a good spot and he gets clear air, we think he’ll run a big race.”

Dalziel said although Mr Quickie hadn’t started on a heavy track, trainer Phillip Stokes said the horse had twice trialled well in those conditions and it could play in their favour.

Dalziel said Mr Quickie left Pakenham on Thursday and Clare Cunningham would saddle him up on Saturday.

Mr Quickie is a $34 chance with TAB fixed odds.

Dalziel, who runs Dalziel Racing Syndications, said even though he couldn’t attend race-meetings it was business as usual in lots of ways.

“The trainers know what to do in sending through videos and I then send them out. I’m in a lot of the horses I’ve syndicated and I miss watching them race but also seeing them at the stables and also spelling and pre-training.”

MAMARAGAN (1) looks a promising colt. Great run at his last start when placed in the Golden Slipper Stakes. He’s drawn to get a great run and appeals as a horse who should run 1400m. AIM (7) wasn’t that far away in the Golden Slipper when fourth. LARIMER STREET (2) was left a sitting shot in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes when second and followed that with a win over 1200m at The Valley. OLE KIRK (8) finished an unlucky third in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes. KING’S LEGACY (4) should be suited by a rise in distance to 1400m.

In last year’s VRC Derby WARNING (3) proved to be the superior stayer winning easily by 3.25 lengths. He stuck to his task when he chased home CASTELVECCHIO (1) in the Rosehill Guineas. Castelvecchio will be the horse to beat but he hasn’t run over 2500m before. SHADOW HERO (2) ran on to finish fourth in that race. QUICK THINKER will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of the last three winners of the Tulloch Stakes who won the Australian Derby the following week. ZEBROWSKI finished second to him. He’s half brother to Polish Knight, who Team Hawkes also won this race with. SKIDDAW is the left field. He sat wide and was left in front a long way out when he won at Bendigo last week.

With the enigmatic NATURE STRIP (1) and REDZEL (4) in this race they are going to run along and that will suit the underrated winner of this race last year SANTA ANA LANE (2). Last spring when he was also second-up he finished in The Everest behind Yes Yes Yes and the aforementioned pair finished behind him. He also won this race by 3.5 lengths when second-up last year. Super filly LOVING GABY (13) never runs a bad race. At her last start she easily beat BIVOUAC (7) but he’s capable of turning the tables. PIERATA (2) usually races well at this track and distance. EXCEEDANCE (9) has been well beaten at his two runs but he’s good enough to turn it around.

All arrows point to BRANDENBURG (19) taking out the Doncaster Mile. He ticks the lightly weighted three-year-old box and also the Glen Boss box who has won this race seven times. He chased home three good horses when fourth in the George Ryder Stakes. Another three-year-old SUPER SETH (8) didn’t have a lot of luck in that race. Champion Kiwi mare MELODY BELLE (1) will love the prospect of a wet track. MR QUICKIE (7) didn’t have a lot of luck in the All-Star Mile.
