Jockey Mark Zahra booked for Black Opal winner in Golden Slipper

Melbourne hoop Mark Zahra has been snapped up to ride Black Opal winner Kalashnikov in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper next week.

Owner and bloodstock agent James Harron confirmed via his Twitter that he had secured Zahra’s services to pilot the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained galloper at Rosehill.

Kalashnikov sealed a spot in the Golden Slipper when he surged up to 13th on the order of entry with $187,000 prizemoney earned by winning the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes at Canberra on Sunday.

The son of Capitalist held off the challenge of the Hawkes Racing-trained colt Solar Winds to win the 1200m two-year-old event.

The colt will be looking to follow in the footsteps of his sire Capitalist, which won the Slipper for the Snowdens and Harron back in 2016.

Zahra is looking to win his first Golden Slipper and Kalashnikov is rated a $34 chance with TAB.com.au to provide the hoop with his maiden win in the race.

His booking comes following the news that Ciaron Maher and David Eustace won’t push on to the Golden Slipper with Enthaar.

Zahra had been the regular rider for Enthaar in the filly’s two Melbourne starts, including her last start sixth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond at Caulfield.
