Lineker and cricket stars hail Bairstow after astonishing England win

‘Phenomenal, awesome, utterly ridiculous… one of the greatest test innings of all-time’: Gary Lineker and cricket stars hail Jonny Bairstow after his astonishing century led England to a stunning win over New Zealand

  • England scored 299 off just 50 overs on the final day to claim a five-wicket win
  • Jonny Bairstow smashed the second-fastest Test century by an England batter
  • Ben Stokes hit the winning runs, ending unbeaten on 75 despite a knee issue

Gary Lineker joined the cricket world in paying tribute to Jonny Bairstow after his astonishing century led England to a stunning win over New Zealand.

Bairstow produced one of the great fourth-innings knocks to guide England to a memorable series-winning victory over New Zealand in the second Test at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.

The Yorkshire batter smashed 136 runs from just 92 balls with 14 fours and seven sixes to take the game away from the Kiwis in a thrilling final-session attack on the last day.

Jonny Bairstow propelled England to victory with one of the all-time great Test centuries

Bairstow’s brutal effort was the second-fastest Test century by an England player in terms of balls faced, just short of breaking a 120-year-old record. Bairstow reached three figures from 77 balls, one delivery slower than Gilbert Jessop against Australia in 1902.

Match of the Day host Lineker tweeted: ‘What a fabulous test match. A brilliant run chase and one of the greatest test innings of all-time from @jbairstow21. Superbly positive captaincy from @benstokes38. Well played.’

Former England captain Michael Vaughan said: ‘This is utterly ridiculous .. Last time I saw this type of drama was in 2019 when Jonny was sat on the balcony watching Ben .. Now Ben has the best seat in the house watching Jonny.’

Bairstow blasted New Zealand all around the ground as he turned the Test in England’s favour

Former India opener Virender Sehwag said: ‘Jonny Bairstow, an innings of a lifetime, one of the best counter-attacking 4th innings you will ever see. Well done England , Test Cricket is Best Cricket.’

England one-day vice captain Jos Buttler added: ‘What a win @englandcricket! Phenomenal.’

Former Pakistan batter Bazid Khan tweeted: ‘Save your legs 2.0 Superb from Johnny Bairstow, not bad from Stokes either.’
