Oakbank’s new-look three-day racing carnival is set to give struggling horses a chance to shine with the running of the inaugural Battler’s Bolt – a race for horses with the most amount of starts without winning.
The $37,500 maiden race over 1400m, the brainchild of Oakbank chief executive Shane Collins, will be run on the club’s main day on Easter Saturday.
Collins said the new race would give an extra dimension to the carnival.
“The Oakbank races are renowned over history for having a race for everyone and this only strengthens that theory,’’ Collins said.
“This race now provides a chance to do this on the big stage on Saturday of the Oakbank Easter carnival.
“The more starts a horse has had without winning, the more likely they are for a start in The Battler’s Bolt.
“We want to give these dedicated trainers, owners and their much-loved battler horses a crack at some serious prizemoney and prestige when one of them breaks that drought.’’

Long-term club sponsor Neutrog biological fertilisers has naming rights to the race with its Whoflungdung product.
One of SA’s leading trainers Gordon Richards has also backed the new race.
“For many horses their maiden will be the only race they win in their careers, so I have always said to put the prizemoney up for these races because it gives the owners something decent back in their pockets,’’ Richards said.
Fellow trainer and former jockey Krystal Bishop, who now trains with John Dunn, said she was looking forward to the Oakbank carnival and watching the new race unfold.
While the duo may not have the runners to match the bigger stables, she can’t wait for the carnival to kick off and is hoping to find a runner for the Bolt.
“I think it has always been set traditions (in racing), but this year after the break with Covid, I think there’s a fresh outlook and it’s going to create new traditions,’’ Bishop said.
“And for us that might just see us having a runner in the Bolt.’’
