Stay Inside produces slashing win in first spring hit out

Golden Slipper hero Stay Inside was back with a bang as the Richard and Michael Freedman-trained colt produced the perfect spring warm up at the Randwick trials on Tuesday.

The star son of Extreme Choice had too much dash for the likes of Verry Elleegant, Kolding, Icebath and Brandenburg in the opening heat of a busy morning at headquarters.

Slipper winning jockey Tommy Berry let the gun colt go through his gears and Stay Inside moved clear late in the 900m hit out to score by 1-1/4 lengths in a time of 52.68 seconds (last 600m in 35.44).

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Riodini led the field up and held on for second with Brandenburg coasting home a further half length away.

Superstar mare Verry Elleegant looked to have returned as good as ever when finishing alongside Icebath and Kolding.

But they were five lengths off the speedy Stay Inside, which will be looking to end the curse of recent Slipper winners.

In recent times Slipper winners have largely struggled to continue in the same vein after their two-year-old season.

She Will Reign (2017) is the only Golden Slipper winner of the past eight that has gone on to win another race while the last colt was triple crown victor Pierro in 2012.

The Group 2 Run To The Rose shapes as a likely kick off point for Stay Inside on September 11.

Stay Inside is then set to be targeted at the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) on September 25 where he currently shares favouritism with Godolphin star Anamoe at $4.50 with TAB fixed odds.

A tilt at $15m The Everest is also on the agenda should Stay Inside earn a slot in the race. He is rated an $8 chance for the lucrative feature sprint.

It was a busy morning for the Freedmans at Randwick with 2019 Inglis Millennium winner Prime Star and Group 1 winner Forbidden Love both in the second heat.

Prime Star finished best down the outside in the 900m trial to score by a length from Brad Widdup’s Adelong while Forbidden Love hit the line under a strong hold in third.

The winner clocked 54.03 seconds (last 600m in 35.71).
