TAB On The Punt: Nathan Exelby previews the meeting at Eagle Farm

Sky Racing and Brisbane Racing Club’s turf expert Nathan Exelby runs his eye over Saturday’s Queensland Oaks meeting at Eagle Farm.

Volcanic Rock, R2 No.9 – $2.40

Put away after two runs late last year and seems to have come back better going on the solid fresh effort at Rosehill. No match for the winner in the end, but battled on solidly and expect the extra trip to suit now. Will sit right on speed and make it very hard for the others to get him down.

Boomtown Lass, R4 No.5 – $3.70

She just can’t draw an alley and sure enough she comes up with another outside draw here. This race doesn’t have an abundance of speed though, so there’s every chance her early speed can put her in the right spot and from there she will be very hard to beat. She usually goes like a bomb fresh.

Duais, R8 No.1 – $5

Had the wood on Bargain in Sydney and may have been a touch unlucky not to beat Hungry Heart in the ATC Oaks. That’s terrific form for this race. The 49 days between runs is the query, but stable adamant she’s right on song and that being the case, she can prove too classy for these.

Race 1: Masaff $14-$4.80

Race 4: Boomtown Lass $3.90-$3.70

Race 6: Scallopini $14-$10, Stampe $17-$11

Race 7: Nudge $7-$5

Race 8: Duais $6-$5, Media Award $11-$8, Bargain $4.50-$4.80, Charm’s Star $6-$7.50

Race 9: Rocketing By $13-$7.50, Georgie’s Pride $5.50-$3.70

Groundswell ($3.30) comes up favourite after poor effort at Doomben last time. Connections suggest he is best when allowed to lead, so assume those will be the tactics here. He’s the best horse in the race, but hard to have faith after what we saw last time. It’s a wide open race if he again fails to put in. Flash Aah ($11) is mixing his distances, but with good effect. He was super winning over 1000m at Caloundra last Friday and is proven at this longer trip. East Asia ($14) was given no hope being so aggressively ridden at Gosford last time and can improve sharply here. Charleise ($5.50) is progressing through the grades nicely this prep and also has a hope, along with the consistent Luvoir ($5.50).

Selections: 3 Flash Aah, 11 East Asia, 1 Groundswell, 6 Charleise

Plenty of depth to this one as well. Polly Grey ($7.50) is going super at the moment – admittedly over longer trips and on tracks with give in them. Her Good track record of one placing in eight attempts doesn’t read well, but she’s been super competitive in recent times, including a recent 1600m run at Randwick where she was exposed the whole way and kept finding. Think she can give a sight. Stablemate Nudge ($4) broke a long run of outs when the midrace tempo lift really suited her from the back. She was dominant there in the end. Nettoyer ($6) battled on fairly well in the Doomben Cup, while Rocha Clock ($6.50) is going very well but again has to concede a start from a poor draw.

Selections: 2 Polly Grey, 5 Nudge, 1 Nettoyer, 3 Rocha Clock

Duais will need a top ride from Hugh Bowman. Picture: Getty ImagesSource:Getty Images

I’ve made the case for Duais ($5) over Bargain ($4.60) in the Best Bets. Hugh Bowman just needs to pull out a ride like he did on Senor Toba last week and she’s hard to beat. Of the others, thought Charms Star ($7.50) might be the biggest improver out of the Roses. She hadn’t raced for 63 days leading into that, in what was her first run for Chris Waller. She’s sure to have improved considerably in the last fortnight and the fact she’s placed in the New Zealand Oaks shows she’s going to relish the extra trip here. Grace And Harmony ($5.50) is a query at the trip, but better draw is a big help. Was giving Media Award ($8.50) a good hope, but the queries over her fitness are a huge concern now.

Selections: 1 Duais, 8 Charms Star, 6 Grace And Harmony

Kisukano ($4) got the better of these at Doomben, while Georgie’s Pride ($3.70) is chasing a picket fence at this track after fighting back last time. Both have hopes, but suspect they face tougher tasks here compared to last time. Our Playboy ($6.50) was gelded before an eye-catching first up run at Doomben, where he charged late. Extra trip looks ideal and he will be better for the run. Thought he ran okay at this course in the summer. Garoppolo ($31) was a flop last time at Doomben, but previous run gives him a hope here at the big odds. Tramonto ($13) was monstrous in the same race, battling on strongly after being wide the trip. Rocketing By ($7.50) has disappointed so far this prep, but blinkers go on here and wary of sharp improvement.

Selections: 5 Our Playboy, 10 Garoppolo, 1 Rocketing By

At Rosehill, CAPE BRETON (Race 1, $1.80) has been kept at home to run here instead of Eagle Farm. Chris Waller paid up for him in the J.J. Atkins this week, so he’s obviously doing everything right. Can win again here. At Flemington, FIFTH POSITION (Race 9, $5.50) has his second start in Australia after being well backed to win first-up at Warrnambool. Overseas ratings suggest he can take a big step forward here.
