Toby Edmonds concedes The Harrovian needs to lift to be competitive in All-Star Mile

Trainers Toby and Trent Edmonds have less than a fortnight to get cult Queensland galloper The Harrovian up to speed in the $5 million All-Star Mile at The Valley.

The Harrovian built up an enormous support base during an 11-race winning streak, which started in Cairns on July 19 last year and ran through to a Listed race at Eagle Farm on Boxing Day.

The Harrovian’s exploits led his fans to vote him into the top 10 All-Star Mile contenders, which guaranteed him a place in the 15-strong line-up at The Valley on March 13.

However, The Harrovian could only manage a midfield finish in the Group 3 Shaftesbury Avenue Stakes (1400m) when making his return to Victoria after almost three years away at Flemington.

Toby Edmonds said The Harrovian was not disgraced at Flemington, adding the son of Fastnet Rock didn’t have much room in the straight until his winning chance had passed.

He said The Harrovian’s owners remained philosophical despite the end of the gelding’s winning streak.

“They’re OK, they learned and they’ve had a pretty good run with him,” Edmonds said.

“You can’t be disappointed in the horse. They got him cheap and he’s won over $700,000 for them.”

But Edmonds conceded The Harrovian needed to lift if he were to match stars such as Arcadia Queen and Russian Camelot in the All-Star Mile.

“It was good when he got clear, he stretched out nicely,” Edmonds said.

“He does need to find a bit for the All-Star Mile obviously but you have got to be in it to win it.

“He has a bit of improvement in him because we don’t work them that hard. That run will bring him on pretty quick.”

Edmonds said getting The Harrovian a look at the unique circuit at The Valley was vital in the lead-up to the rich event.

“He hasn’t had a look at The Valley yet so he has to go over there,” Edmonds said.

“If he doesn’t go there on Saturday morning for a look, then he’ll go over next Tuesday morning but I’ve got to talk to the guys at The Valley.”
