Trent Busuttin’s love affair with Sydney set to continue on Saturday

Trent Busuttin has had almost 2500 runners in Australia yet two of his three Group 1 winners have come from just 59 starters in the New South Wales.

The Victorian-based trainer returns to Rosehill on Saturday with Mirage Dancer chasing another major race success $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill.

Busuttin trains in partnership with Natalie Young and the pair combined to win The Metropolitan with the imported stayer last spring.

The former Kiwi conditioner believes the Frankel entire is going as well as ever ahead of Saturday’s weight-for-age contest.

“My bloke is a rung below the top ones, the top ones are the Verry Elleegants and those sort of horses but they are not here this year,” Busuttin said.

“I said to the owners after the Sky High we’ll go to the Tancred, we’ll run in the top five or six.

“There’s probably going to be two or three that are better than us but we’ll pick up some stake money but since the field has come out, I’ve reassessed and think he’s a legitimate winning chance.

“My horse is going to get a firm track which he wants. He’s going to get a mile and a half which he wants and I was rapt when the barriers came out.

“He’s going to get the right run in behind them – fourth, fifth, sixth spending no bickies and will present at the right time.

“I think this could be a race where there’s only about three to four lengths covering the first 10 home so any advantage is a big help.”

Champion Victorian jockey Damien liver will ride Mirage Dancer and TAB Fixed Odds has the stayer rated a $9.50 chance after opening the seven-year-old at $11.

The favourite for the race is Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet at $4.80 ahead of Melody Belle at $6.50 with Toffee Tongue at $8 and Angel Of Truth at $8.50.

“Sir Dragonet is a Cox Plate winner but the query is, is he a wet tracker?,” Busuttin said.

“The Kiwi mare (Melody Belle) obviously has a query over her at a mile and a half and its also been a fair while since Angel Of Truth’s won a race.

“Toffee Tongue I thought is probably the horse to beat. She beat them fair and square in the Sky High.

“Everyone likes to put the pot in and say they’re average fields and that but try and get one to the race, to this level and then try and win it.”
