Punters have rallied behind the Annabel Neasham-trained Zaaki to win Saturday’s Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) with the import backed into equal favouritism for the Gold Coast feature.
The six-year-old was among a competitive list of 22 nominations for the Hollindale on Monday and received immediate support when TAB ‘all in’ markets opened, shortening from $11 into $6 equal favourite.
Zaaki shares the top line of betting with Kiwi superstar Melody Belle and Godolphin gun Avilius, which will ensure a high quality field is set to line up on the weekend.
Zaaki is having just his third Australian start after making his debut when finishing a credible sixth in the Doncaster Mile before finishing runner up in the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) last start.
Leading Sydney jockey James McDonald will travel to Queensland for the first time this Brisbane Winter Carnival to partner Zaaki on Saturday.
The Hollindale Stakes nominations were further strengthened by last start Australian Cup winner Homesman and Queen Of The Turf Stakes victor Nettoyer ($11).
Homesman has also been backed in early betting from $11 into $8 where he sits alongside Chris Waller’s recent Neville Sellwood Stakes winner Shared Ambition.
The race could end up being the final start for Group 1 winner Humidor, a $15 chance in betting, with the veteran galloper one of four Waller horses nominated alongside Mister Sea Wolf and Toffee Tongue (both $15).
The final field for the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes will be declared on Wednesday morning.
