Allegri eyeing his 'next adventure abroad' according to Cagliari chief

‘Massimiliano told me his next adventure will be abroad’: Cagliari chief reveals Premier League target Max Allegri rejected chance to manage them in January as former Juventus boss eyes job away from Italy

  • The 52-year-old is out of work but has had a successful career in Serie A
  • Cagliari president Tommaso Guilini revealed Allegri rejected his offer in January
  • Decorated manager has been linked with Manchester United, PSG and others

Former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri rejected a return to Cagliari in January because he wants his next job to be abroad, according to the Serie A side’s club president Tommaso Giulini.

The decorated Italian manager has been out of work since leaving Juventus in 2019 and is regularly linked with the Premier League and Europe’s top clubs when management roles come available.

The 52-year-old has so far only managed clubs from his native country, with successful spells with Sassuolo, AC Milan and the Sardinian club before joining The Old Lady.

Premier league target Max Allegri reportedly wants his next job to be away from Italy

Cagliari’s president Tommaso Giulini revealed he audaciously tried to tempt Allegri back to the mid-table club in January, but revealed the manager rejected due to ambitions for his next management to be in another country.

‘I made a bit of a mad phone call towards the end of January, offering Allegri the job, knowing full well it was going to be impossible,’ Giulini said on Sky Sport Italia.

Cagliari chief Tommaso Guilini revealed Allegri rejected him in January to manage abroad

‘Massimiliano told me his next adventure will be abroad, even if he was fascinated by the proposal of leading Cagliari during our centenary year. I knew even before making the phone call that it was going to be improbable.’

Allegri has been linked with the likes of Premier League clubs Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham during the last two seasons.

He also been linked with the hotseat at Paris Saint-Germain last week with sporting director Leonardo Araujo readying an offer after reports that the former Juve boss is ‘ready to work again’.

6x Serie A

4x Italian Cup

3x Italian Super Cup

1x Supercoppa di Serie C

Allegri established himself as one of the best-renowned managers in Europe in his five years at Juve, winning Serie A in every year, securing two domestic doubles and reaching the Champions League Final on two occasions.

He also managed Milan to their first Serie A title for seven years in 2011, whilst he also helped Sassuolo rise through the divisions and led Cagliari to a highest top-flight finish in 15 years.

‘I’m not listening to any coaches right now’: UFC fan favourite Mike Perry ditches trainers and says only his GIRLFRIEND will be in his corner for future bouts in a bid to transform poor run of form in the octagon

  • UFC fan favourite Mike Perry says he has ditched his coaches for future fights
  • The 28-year-old is in a poor run of form, having lost five of his last seven bouts
  • Perry says only his girlfriend will be in his corner when he next fights in MMA
  • England’s Darren Till is keen to fight Perry on the UFC’s ‘Fight Island’

UFC star Mike Perry has decided to ditch his coaches for future MMA bouts, revealing only his girlfriend will be in his corner for upcoming fights.

The welterweight, who has lingered in the top 30 fighters in the division for some time, has chosen to mix things up after enduring a poor run of form inside the octagon.

‘Platinum’ has won just two of his last seven bouts, convincing the 28-year-old that wholesale changes need to be made in his coaching set up.

And the fan favourite has revealed that only his girlfriend, Latory Gonzalez, will be in his corner when he next enters the octagon.

‘My girlfriend, just her. If not, her and her friend,’ he told MMA Junkie. ‘I’m not listening to any coaches right now.

‘Coaches who are saying things that they ain’t gonna go in there and do. They want it to be this way or this way, and like it’s a totally different way.

‘I need a guy like me to hold mitts; I want to hold mitts for myself to be honest with you. I can show people a couple of techniques or whatever, and I’m just ready to fight for my life… Ain’t nobody gonna take this from me.’

‘Platinum’ is on a poor run of form, having lost five of his previous bouts in the octagon

The 28-year-old dismissed the role of trainers, saying he doesn’t need advice between rounds

The American also dismissed the role of those in a fighter’s corner during bouts.

‘All I need the corner for is to pass me the bottle of water, wipe my head off or put the ice on my neck when I get hot coming in between the rounds,’ he added.

‘It’s probably not gonna go more than five minutes, and if it does, all I need is a bottle of water.

‘I need to sip a drink, put some ice on my neck, and I don’t need no advice.’

Perry has had a love-hate relationship with UFC rival Darren Till, having sparred with the Englishman in the past.

Till has expressed his intention to meet his foe in a future bout on ‘Fight Island’, the mysterious location in which UFC President Dana White wishes to host events during the coronavirus crisis.

  • Shannon Briggs has claimed that he has agreed a deal to take on Tyson next
  • The Baddest Man on the Planet had been expected to face Evander Holyfield

Mike Tyson has given fans another glimpse of his trademark power and speed as he continues to work towards a sensational comeback fight.

The 53-year-old has been training hard ahead of a controversial return to the ring, with a trilogy fight against old foe Evander Holyfield seemingly on the cards.

But after Shannon Briggs claimed that he had agreed to take on Tyson ahead of Holyfield, the Baddest Man on the Planet posted an update to social media.

Tyson has been training hard ahead of a return to the ring. He hung up his gloves back in 2005

Launching his own page on Chinese microblogging site Weibo with a video, Tyson told fans that: ‘there’s a possibility I might come back’.

Wearing just a pair of jeans and no top, the American then proceeds to shadow box, showing off the speed which once made him the most feared man in boxing.

In the short clip, Tyson throws a series of jabs, hooks and uppercuts, teasing the sort of punches we could see again if a fight with Briggs is made official.

On Tuesday, the 48-year-old claimed that he had spoken directly with Tyson to agree a heavyweight showdown in the near future.

Tyson continues to tease fans about a comeback and says there’s a ‘possibility’ he could return

He said: ‘I just talked to Mike Tyson, it’s going down, me and Mike, we’re going to make it happen, it’s official, you’re going to see it happen, Brownsville versus Brownsville.

‘Me and Tyson are going to lace up the gloves, we’re going to rumble, rumble in the jungle. We’re going to let our fist do the talking.’

He says the fight against Tyson will be an exhibition with the two KO artists going toe-to-toe.

Tyson is yet to comment on a fight with Briggs, but in the video he promises to ‘fight with the spirit of Mao’ – the founding father of the People’s Republic of China – if he does make a return to the ring.

At the end of the clip, the 53-year-old gives his dog a hug and a kiss after having his shadow boxing session interrupted.

Last weekend, Holyfield said his team were in talks with Tyson’s and he was confident over an agreement being reached, though no deal had been struck.

Tyson suffered back-to-back losses to Holyfield and infamously bit off part of his opponent’s ear during their second fight in 1997, leading to him being disqualified.

Both men have recently posted workout videos showing off their physical prowess and Tyson has wowed fans with his famous power on the pads, though many from the boxing world are discouraging him from lacing his gloves up again over fears of serious injury.

Jesse Lingard opens up on his 'lows' at Manchester United

‘I just think of all the lows that I’ve had’: Jesse Lingard admits criticism from fans has spurred him on as he looks to emulate the trophy-winning Manchester United heroes he grew up watching

  • Jesse Lingard has spoken of the ‘lows’ he has endured at Manchester United
  • Lingard has often been left out of the side and has struggled for consistency
  • He says he still relishes playing for United and is eager to win trophies regularly

Jesse Lingard has opened up on his struggles at Manchester United and stressed the importance of remaining positive in difficult moments.

Lingard has received a considerable amount of criticism for some of his performances, while he has failed to score or provide an assist in 20 Premier League appearances this season.

The 27-year-old has found himself left out of the starting lineup on many occasions this season but stressed that he still relishes playing for such a high-profile club.

Jesse Lingard spoke of his ‘lows’ at Manchester United but says it’s important to stay positive

Lingard told the club’s official website: ‘The main thing is to concentrate on the game, to get the win. That’s the most important thing. I just think of all the lows that I’ve had, I’m here now, coming onto the pitch and doing what I love doing best.

‘I love playing football and I’m at Man United, so you try and be positive in that aspect and your family are there watching. You’ve just got to go out there and enjoy it, take the positives.’

Lingard has enjoyed some positive moments at United, which included scoring the winner against Crystal Palace in the 2016 FA Cup final, while he has also won the Europa League and the League Cup.

In addition, he scored for England against Panama at the 2018 World Cup but he has since fallen out of favour under Gareth Southgate.

Lingard stressed that United are eager to return to the days when winning trophies was a regular occurrence for the club.

The 27-year-old has endured frustration this season but is eager to turn his situation around

He said: ‘I think when I was coming through, the history of the club stuck out a lot to me.

‘The amount of trophies that had been won over the years was so inspiring. As a young lad coming through at that time, you can see the success, you know it’s there and you can’t wait to work hard to get into their shoes and be winning trophies as well.

‘We go through different stages of life where things change, managers come in and life transitions but as a club we have that backing behind us. We do have that never-say-die attitude. We have that hunger to win.’

There have been suggestions that Lingard could leave United, but he appears determined to turn his situation at the club around.

Lingard’s current contract at United has a year to run although the club do have the option of a 12-month extension thereafter.

John Terry reprises his full-kit look from 2012 Champions League final

John Terry has Jamie Redknapp and Rory McIlroy in hysterics as he reprises THAT infamous full-kit look from 2012 Champions League final to take part in trophy challenge with golf ace for new Sky show

  • Jamie Redknapp and his dad Harry are hosting a new entertainment show on Sky
  • Called Redknapp’s Home Fixture, they’ll present alongside comedian Tom Davis
  • One of the first guests on the show will be former Chelsea captain John Terry
  • The Aston Villa coach donned full kit for his cameo, even down to the shinpads

After years of being mercilessly ribbed for collecting the Champions League trophy in full kit in 2012, John Terry has proved he is able to see the funny side.

The former defender was suspended for the final in Germany against Bayern Munich in 2012, but put on his full strip to climb the stairs and receive his medal after Roberto Di Matteo’s men won on penalties eight years ago.

Terry was roundly mocked for his actions and plenty of skits through the years have poked fun at the ex-England international for it.

John Terry has reprised his 2012 Champions League full-kit look for a new show on Sky One

Terry has long been mocked for lifting the Champions League trophy in his full kit back in 2012

Jamie Redknapp, the presenter of Redknapp’s Home Fixture, definitely saw the funny side

But the 39-year-old has proven he can see the funny side to it, after his cameo on Sky One’s new entertainment programme Redknapp’s Home Fixture

Appearing in a trophy challenge from home against golf ace Rory McIlroy, Terry lined up his array of silverware, including a replics of the 2012 trophy, with the idea of chipping golf balls into each of them.

Coming from off camera, the Aston Villa assistant appears into shot wearing not just his Chelsea shirt from 2012, but the full kit, right down to the shinpads, as Terry himself points out.

Terry was taking part in a golf challenge against former world number one Rory McIlroy

The revelation has Jamie in stitches, while McIlroy is bent over double with his own trophy collection in the background ahead of his attempt at the same challenge.

It is the second episode of the new Sky show, which is set to bring the worlds of sport and entertainment together.

Presented by Jamie Redknapp, who works for Sky Sports as a pundit as well as taking part in other shows such as A League of Their Own, the former Liverpool star is joined by his dad and former Tottenham boss Harry, as well as friend and comedian Tom Davis for the six-part series.

‘We’re all missing sport a huge amount so I’m so pleased to have been able to team up with my Dad and Tom Davis to bring a bit of sporting chit chat back to Sky at this time,’ said Jamie.

Harry Redknapp was left in stitches, too, as the Aston Villa coach revealed his attire on camera

‘We’ve got some great guests lined up so can’t wait for people to tune in – I’m sure Dad will have a story or two too!’

Harry added: ‘I was really excited to get the opportunity to work alongside Jamie for the first time for Sky and I love big Tom Davis too.

‘I, like the rest of the country, need some sport back in my life so hopefully this will bring some joy to those missing it too.’

The second episode, featuring Terry and McIlroy, airs at 10pm on Friday night.

Terry is currently the assistant coach at Aston Villa, where he is the number two to Dean Smith

The Undertaker explains his Brock Lesnar confrontation at UFC 121

The Undertaker has revealed that he intentionally confronted Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 in 2010 and claims WWE chairman Vince McMahon was in on the plan.

Taker was sat cageside with his wife as Lesnar was beaten by Cain Velasquez in the main event.

But after Lesnar had left the Octagon following his loss, he crossed paths with his WWE rival on the way back to the dressing room.

The Undertaker stopped midway through his interview, stared at Lesnar and said: ‘You wanna do it?’.

Fans were left to guess the meaning behind Taker’s question, but the 55-year-old has now revealed that the exchange was an attempt to bring Lesnar back to the WWE.

‘I was there to pick a fight. I was sat there personally to pick a fight,’ The Undertaker told ESPN.

‘I was unaware that Dana had no clue what was going to happen, which I felt horrible about after the fact.

‘I thought there had been some kind of discussion between him and Vince [McMahon].

‘At that time, Brock was so hot in the MMA world. Obviously, it was like, ‘you know what, why not try it?’.

‘There was no personal animosity, really. But it was basically me saying, ‘you left our world, I’m gonna come into your world and call you out’. That was it.

‘Obviously it was a huge media storm, and it’s all your fault!’

Asked if he wanted a real fight with Lesnar, Undertaker replied: ‘Like a wrestling fight… I was trying to get him back in my world.

‘I’m pretty gutsy but my days of getting in the Octagon are far past me, I mean I am smart enough to realise that.

‘I thought if I could get somebody who was on… obviously there was so much history there because of his run with WWE, then his success in UFC, this is huge, if we could make it happen, that’s what it was all about.

‘He knew I was going to be there, I don’t know how much he knew about what I was going to do.

‘And it worked out because where I was at, he could’ve went another way, I got really lucky that he came by us.

‘If you watched it back Michelle, my wife who was with me, kinda nudged me and [said] like, ‘here he comes’.

‘Because I don’t even know that I would’ve done the interview if I hadn’t have been in the right spot. It worked out perfectly for you and perfectly for me.

‘He came right by me, and I was like, ‘you wanna do this?’. There it was, man. It blew up. You were in the right place at the right time, and I got lucky.’

Asked if he spoke to Lesnar after the surprise confrontation, The Undertaker said: ‘Yeah, it wasn’t a good night for him personally but on the way out I didn’t tell him much about that but I checked on him, made sure he was okay, was like, ‘we’ll see what happens down the road, bro’. One of those kinda deals.’

Murray leaps out of his seat to celebrate winning Virtual Madrid Open

Delighted Andy Murray leaps out of his seat to celebrate winning Virtual Madrid Open in front of devastated David Goffin after clinching tie-break

  • Andy Murray defeated David Goffin 7-5 in tie-break following tense final
  • Former British No 1 had earlier in the day been given spot in the final despite loss
  • Diego Schwarzman had beaten Brit but claimed it was only via technical glitches
  • Murray received £130,000 to donate after his victory in the Virtual Madrid Open

It might not have the usual challenges presented by the clay courts but Andy Murray has proven he can be just as devastating behind a controller as well as a racket by winning the Virtual Madrid Open.

The Brit triumphed in the final of the tournament having seen off David Goffin 7-5 in a tie-break, leaping off his chair with delight after landing yet another title.

Goffin could only bury his head in his hands as he watched the Brit return an unbeatable crosscourt forehand to secure victory.

Murray  said afterwards: ‘Of all the matches I played, that felt like a proper match, we were a similar level.

‘It was good. I enjoyed it, there’s not much we can do just now, we spend most of the days indoors and can’t get out much so it was a fun thing to do.’

Murray’s success on the virtual court via the Playstation game Tennis World Tour came despite losing earlier in the day in the semi-finals to Diego Schwarzman.

However their last four encounter was plagued by technical issues and bizarre glitches that the Argentine felt were too unfair on the former British and world No 1 and thus offered his place in the final to the 32-year-old.

‘I don’t deserve to be in the final,’ Schwartzman told Murray. ‘You play the final. If you’re in Europe the transmission is much better because of the internet.’

Murray saw off some competitors along the way, even defeating the ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal in the group stage.

Murray’s crosscourt winner saw him clinch the title as he leaps off his seat to celebrate while David Goffin buries his head in his hands

Murray’s prize for winning the tournament is £130,000 to give to those most affected by the shutdown of the ATP Tour

After his comprehensive dismantling of Zverev in the quarter-finals, Murray joked he was just too good for the opposition.

The Brit laughed off mischievous accusations from tournament organiser Feliciano Lopez, delivered with a smile, that his rivals were claiming the competition was being fixed in his favour.

‘I know it looks that way but I’m just much better than the other guys,’ said Murray.

The tournament was part of a charity initiative that will donate 50,000 euros (£43,600) to the Madrid Food Bank to help reduce the social impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The winner of each tournament will get 150,000 euros (about £130,000) from which they will be able to decide how much they donate to their colleagues on the tour who have been worst affected by the sport’s shutdown.

Has Neymar played his last game for PSG after Ligue 1's cancellation?

Has Neymar played his last game for PSG? French giants have paid injury-prone superstar £97MILLION to play just 80 games in three years… but Ligue 1’s cancellation could give him the perfect excuse to finally push through a dream return to Barcelona

  • PSG paid £198m for Neymar in a bid to win their first Champions League crown
  • He made the shock decision to leave Barcelona despite being one of their stars
  • Neymar has not provided value for money after suffering a number of injuries
  • PSG have paid him £97m to play in just half of their games in the last three years
  • He has been pushing for a return to Barcelona and Ligue 1 cancellation may help

When Paris Saint-Germain made Neymar the world’s most expensive player of all time, their hopes for what he would achieve were sky-high.

The Brazilian superstar, who cost an eye-watering £198million in the summer of 2017, was supposed to turn the club into a European powerhouse and establish himself as the best player on the planet.

It was claimed that as well as fancying the astronomical wages on offer in Paris, Neymar also wanted to escape from Lionel Messi’s shadow at Barcelona and challenge his friend for the Ballon d’Or.

Neymar became the world’s most expensive player when he joined PSG in August, 2017

The Brazilian has struggled for fitness in France and has suffered a number of injury problems

But instead of leading PSG to Champions League glory and being crowned the world’s best player, Neymar has spent much of his time in France on the treatment table, pining for a return to the Nou Camp.

‘Operation Neymar’, as it was dubbed in the Spanish newspapers at the time, saw PSG rock European football’s hierarchy when their Qatari owners sanctioned a shock move for the former Santos man, paying his release clause to seal a deal.

Barca were furious with both the Ligue 1 giants and Neymar, who had been seen as a natural successor to Messi – both on the pitch and commercially – whenever the legendary Argentine decided to hang up his boots.

The Brazilian, however, insisted that his motivation for leaving Spain, where he formed a deadly attacking trident with Messi and Luis Suarez, and won eight trophies in four years, including two LaLiga titles and the Champions League, was all to do with personal ambition.

‘I am extremely happy to join Paris Saint-Germain,’ said Neymar after signing a lucrative five-year contract at the Parc des Princes.

‘Since I arrived in Europe, the club has always been one of the most competitive and most ambitious.

Neymar formed a deadly trident with Luis Suarez (left) and Lionel Messi (right) at Barcelona

The PSG forward is currently back in Brazil with football on hold due to the coronavirus crisis

Transfer fee: £198million

Appearances: 80

Goals: 69

Games PSG have played since he joined in August 2017: 155

Honours: Ligue 1 title (2017-18, 2018-19), Coupe de France (2017-18), Coupe de la Ligue (2017-18)

‘And the biggest challenge, what most motivated me to join my new team-mates is to help the club to conquer the titles that their fans want.

‘Paris Saint-Germain’s ambition attracted me to the club, along with the passion and the energy this brings. I played four seasons in Europe and I feel ready to take the challenge.’

One of the ‘titles’ Neymar referred to in his first speech as a PSG player was the Ligue 1 crown, with Monaco having caused an upset by beating the big spenders to top spot in the 2016-17 season.

Finishing above Ligue 1’s 19 other teams has not proved an issue for The Parisians since Neymar’s arrival, with back-to-back league titles secured with relative ease.

The input from their main man, however, at least in terms of games played, has not been what PSG’s ambitious owners would have hoped for. Neymar has made just 52 top-flight appearances across three seasons.

The 28-year-old has been plagued by injuries since making the move to Paris. First there was a fractured metatarsal in February, 2018, which brought a premature end to a promising first season at the club.

The Brazilian has only featured in half of PSG’s games because of injuries since joining in 2017

Neymar, pictured in action in January, earns around £600,000 a week with the Ligue 1 giants

Then, in the 2018-19 season, another foot injury kept him out of a crucial Champions League encounter with Manchester United. He watched from the sidelines as PSG were knocked out and was later banned for three matches for complaining about the referee awarding a late penalty on Instagram.

Last summer he suffered a broken ankle for Brazil, then hamstring and rib injuries after returning to action for his club. It has been nothing short of a nightmare.

All of those problems have meant Neymar has played just 80 of a possible 155 games in all competitions for PSG since joining almost three years ago. That’s just 51 per cent of their matches.

In that time, he has been paid a whopping £97m in wages, which equates to more than £1.2m per appearance. The club’s total expenditure on Neymar so far stands at almost £300m – and there’s more to come.

That’s not to say that when he has been on the pitch, he’s been a disappointment. Neymar has scored an incredible 69 goals in his 80 appearances, with 47 in 52 Ligue 1 appearances and another 14 in just 17 Champions League ties.

One of those came in PSG’s last game before football was shut down due to the coronavirus crisis as he grabbed the opener in a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, helping send Thomas Tuchel’s men through to the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

Neymar celebrates after helping send PSG into the Champions League quarter-finals

Their run to the last eight represents their best performance in the Champions League since before Neymar arrived and keeps alive the club’s ultimate dream of conquering Europe for the first time in their history.

It doesn’t, however, make up for the multitude of problems Neymar has caused over the last year, having seemingly become frustrated with life in Paris.

In April 2019, he appeared to punch a fan in the face after losing the Coupe de France final to Rennes. A few months later, he went AWOL in Brazil and failed to return to pre-season training on time. And then there was the flirting with Barcelona.

Despite being sued by his former club over the return of loyalty bonus, the Brazilian emerged as Barca’s top transfer target last summer. He was desperate to go back.

Neymar made it clear to club officials and manager Tuchel that he wanted to reunite with Messi, Suarez and the rest of his former team-mates, and reports suggested that PSG were open to cashing in on their injury-prone star.

However, despite offering a number of players in part-exchange, Barcelona were unable to come up with the money to strike a deal and Neymar stayed put.

Neymar, pictured celebrating with Messi in 2017, is keen on a return to Barcelona this summer

The club’s desire to bring back the forward, particularly with Messi closing in on his 33rd birthday, remains undiminished, and they are certain to make another serious attempt when the transfer window eventually reopens.

The LaLiga champions have financial issues of their own to cope with, particularly with football in Spain on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic, but they may feel that the cancellation of the Ligue 1 season, which was announced on Tuesday, provides them with the perfect opportunity to tempt PSG into selling.

Neymar, who earns £600,000 a week, and his team-mates have rejected pay cuts and talks over a compromise have stalled, leaving PSG in a tricky situation.

They still have a crucial Champions League quarter-final to play, but with games in France banned until at least September, and the future of the competition still uncertain, nobody knows if it will even go ahead.

It may well turn out that Neymar has already played his final game for PSG. If he has, the club will be short of a superstar, but noticeably better off financially.

For the man in question, a move to Barcelona would be a dream come true. Again.

Mike Tyson had his face tattooed as he 'didn't want to fight'

Mike Tyson had his face tattooed just days before Clifford Etienne bout as he ‘didn’t want to fight’ late on in his career, claims his former trainer

  • Mike Tyson got a tattoo on his face just a week before his Clifford Etienne fight
  • Tyson had a tribal tattoo inked on his face and later pulled out of the fight
  • Eventually the bout went ahead and Tyson knocked him out in the first round
  • Tyson’s former trainer Jeff Fenech has since claimed he wasn’t prepared to fight

Mike Tyson’s former trainer has fascinatingly revealed that the heavyweight legend got the tribal tattoo on his face to avoid fighting late on in his career.

Former American heavyweight Tyson was scheduled to fight compatriot Clifford Etienne in February 2003, just eight months on from his defeat to Lennox Lewis.

After a proper build-up to the fight, Tyson decided to get a tribal tattoo inked on his face in Las Vegas and just days before his bout against Etienne, he pulled out of the showdown.

Mike Tyson had his face tattooed just days before his fight against Clifford Etienne in 2003

However, the fight eventually went ahead as planned and Tyson – who had replacement trainer Freddie Roach in his corner – knocked out Etienne within 49 seconds in the first round in Memphis, Tennessee.

But his former trainer Jeff Fenech has since admitted that he was left in tears and got the first flight home after finding out the news that Tyson didn’t want to fight.

Fenech, who also revealed Tyson skipped training to get the new ink, told Fox Sports: ‘My first impression was that I’ve never had a tattoo in my life, but I thought we are fighting in a week and when you get a tattoo you can’t fight because they scab up and it wouldn’t be healthy to do that.

‘We sat down and spoke and he didn’t really want to fight and he wasn’t prepared to and that was one of the reasons he got the tattoo.

Tyson ended up knocking out Etienne within 49 seconds of the first round in 2003

‘After a good hour talk I was in tears when I left the house that night. I went and stayed in a hotel because I was pretty despondent.

‘I was away from home for eight weeks in Vegas getting him ready for the fight and I stayed in a hotel and got on the first flight back to my family because that was my priority.

‘A week later he fought and knocked out Clifford in one round and I was upset. I was happy for Mike that he won, but I was also upset that I had trained him for eight weeks and I wasn’t a part of that win.’

The fight against Etienne turned out to be Tyson’s final professional victory in the ring, as he went on to lose his last two fights against Danny Williams and Kenny McBride.

Paul Merson reveals his Premier League team of the season

Paul Merson reveals his Premier League team of the season with EIGHT Liverpool players… but which three players break the mould to break into the former Arsenal striker’s XI?

  • Paul Merson has gone through his Premier League team of the season so far
  • The former Arsenal and Aston Villa striker has named eight Liverpool stars in it
  • The Reds were 25 points clear at the top before the season was suspended

Paul Merson has named no fewer than eight Liverpool players in his Premier League Team of the Season so far.

The inclusion of so many of Jurgen Klopp’s men is hardly surprising given their domination in the top flight this season, with the Reds racing 25 points clear at the top of the table before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Anfield outfit are heavily represented across all areas of the pitch in Merson’s 4-3-3 formation, with only one spot in defence, one in midfield and another in attack reserved for stars from other clubs.

Given Liverpool’s defensive record throughout the season, the former Arsenal striker had little option but to opt for Alisson in goal, with the Brazilian stopper having kept 10 cleansheets in his 20 league appearances this campaign.

It is the same story with the defence, with three out of the four coming from Klopp’s side.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson are all selected, but there is a surprise inclusion alongside them, with Merson picking Crystal Palace’s Gary Cahill to slot in at the second centre-back position.

‘He’s been outstanding for Crystal Palace,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘He came in last summer and you’ve got to remember he didn’t play much football at all last season for Chelsea.

‘He was completely frozen out at Stamford Bridge and he really shouldn’t have been considering what he did for the club and what a good player he was.

‘To then go to Palace where you are playing in a team that only gets 35 to 40 per cent possession, compared to Chelsea’s 60 per cent, and to defend as well as he has, he deserves credit.

‘He has marshalled that defence and he’s a key reason Palace aren’t deep in a relegation battle.’

Merson has found space for Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne in the central midfield

midfield, while also putting Manchester City talisman Kevin De Bruyne in the centre of the park.

And Merson reserved special praise for Wijnaldum and his role as a game-changer for the Reds.

‘I put him down as a big-game player,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘He gets big goals in big games. There are a lot of players around who score a lot of goals, but if you weigh their goals up, they’ll get the third or fourth in a 4-0 win, or they’ll get the consolation goal in a 5-1 defeat.

‘Another really top player, who goes under the radar.’

Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have been included in Merson’s front three, but it is the third, and final member of his striking trio that Merson reserved special praise for.

Jamie Vardy is the top goalscorer in the Premier League this season with 19 goals to date and Merson said of the Leciester City frontman: ‘Many people will go with the Liverpool front three, but I have to make room for Vardy,

‘It’s freakish what he’s done for Leicester this season. He took a big gamble by saying he wouldn’t play for England again to look after himself and extend his career.

‘After doing that, though, he has produced at the highest level.’
