Emma Raducanu’s surgeries could be ‘career-threatening’ as Becker raises concern

Emma Raducanu has been warned by tennis icon Boris Becker that her budding tennis career could be jeopardised by her succession of injury problems after undergoing multiple surgeries earlier this month. The 20-year-old is facing several months out having decided to go under the knife to resolve recurring issues with both of her wrists and ankle, and Becker fears it could have a lasting effect on Raducanu in the future.

Raducanu has not played since her 6-2 6-1 defeat to Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart back in April and she pulled out of the Madrid Open at the last moment earlier this month, before it later emerged that she would need to undergo surgery on the injuries sustained to her wrist and ankle.

She will miss the summer leg of the WTA Tour, ruling her out of both the French Open and Wimbledon, and she could still miss the US Open, where she won her first and only Grand Slam. As a result, the Briton will fall further down the rankings, having already plummeted to 106th in the world.

Becker can be considered a voice of authority given the parallels between his and Raducanu’s career, with both players winning Grand Slams early in their careers before suffering wrist problems. And Becker has admitted he is concerned about the issues she could face later on as she reaches her prime.

“The surgeries that she has had are, in my opinion, career-threatening,” Becker told The Guardian. “Having surgery on your playing wrist, and as a two-handed player, the other wrist – and then on your ankle – is tough to bear for a young woman.”

Raducanu opened up about the difficulties of trying to play through the pain barrier before deciding she had no option but to take decisive action to fix her triple injury problem.

Announcing the news of her surgery earlier this month, the Toronto-born starlet wrote on Instagram: “It is safe to say the last 10 months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury on a bone of both hands.

“I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try heal it, unfortunately it’s not enough.”

Raducanu made her first public appearance since undergoing her triple operation as she attended a fashion show in Mexico. The British No 1 could be seen sporting bandages during the fashion show, highlighting the severity of the issue.

But she did not appear to be too downhearted, grinning in front of the cameras as she posed for pictures and posting an update for her supporters in a video with Vogue: “Just saw the show here in Mexico City, and it was stunning and it was a really nice thing to be a part of,” she said.
