Federer a ‘professional driver’ as he tells Laver Cup fans what he’s been up to
Roger Federer joked that he had taken on a new job a year after retiring from tennis. The Swiss star was back at the Laver Cup exactly 12 months after ending his playing career at the team tournament. And he said that he’d become “a professional driver” to accommodate his four children since spending more time at home.
Federer famously retired at the 2022 Laver Cup inside London’s O2 Arena surrounded by his biggest rivals – Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray – who were by his side as his Europe teammates. While the 42-year-old is no longer playing tennis, he’s still been around at the team tournament for its sixth edition this year in Vancouver.
To mark the anniversary of his retirement, the 20-time Grand Slam champion took part in an on-court Q&A and gave a glimpse into what his life was like after hanging up his racket. While he was no longer on the tour, Federer admitted that things were still hectic as he took on the role of being the driver for his kids.
“The days are long but at the same time, I still feel I don’t have enough time, you know? Because I pack my schedule up. Four kids will do that to you as well,” he laughed. “So I’m a professional driver nowadays and organiser and a logistics man.”
Federer also revealed that he had been going to the gym – something he never thought he’d enjoy. The former world No 1 continued: “So it’s definitely a test on a completely other level. I mean, there’s lots going on. I’m still in the gym. Actually I’m surprised I’m going to the gym.
“I always used to dread the moment of going to the gym so I do that like four or five times a week, believe it or not. I don’t look the part maybe.” When Jim Courier playfully asked if he was still at his playing weight, Federer joked that he was on a diet.
“I’m a little bit heavier unfortunately. I’m working on that right now. I’m on a diet. No, no. It’s all good,” he smiled.
