Good morning my name is sheriff sharon worley . and today i will be briefing you on the facts and circumstances concerning the nye county sheriff's office first officer involved shooting for 2022 as we currently know them the incident occurred on april 11 2022 at approximately zero 204 am this shooting was non-fatal by the time this time . last year we had no officer involved shooting several deputies involved in this shooting were wearing body worn cameras additionally we have some dash camera footage of the moments leading up to the shooting and of the scene during the shooting i will show you that footage in a . minute the staff involved in this shooting are deputy nicholas huggins who has been a peace , officer for nye county for approximately one year deputy huggins is currently assigned a patrol , division in the southern area command deputy elias amandaris who has been a peace officer for nye , county sheriff's office for approximately eight years deputy amandaris is currently assigned a patrol division in the southern area command lieutenant james mcrae who has been a peace officer for the nye county sheriff's office for approximately 16 and a half years lieutenant mcrae , is currently assigned to the training division and as the swat commander the weapon system used by all ncso personnel during this officer involved shooting was a new frontier ar-15 . 223-caliber semi-automatic rifle the rifles carried by lieutenant mcrae and deputy amandaris were equipped with oss suppressors investigation revealed that lieutenant mcrae fired four rounds . deputy amandaris fired eighth round and deputy huggins fired two rounds the circumstances leading , up to the incident originated in tacopa california and ended with the officer-involved shooting on . sr 372 just over the state county line which is located in the southern area command of the . nye county sheriff's office on april 10th 2022 at approximately 10 57 pm ncso dispatch . was advised by inyo county sheriff's office that they and california highway patrol ,
were in pursuit of a subject who had shot at civilians brandished a firearm to other motorists , and had shot at their patrol vehicles during the pursuit with a high-powered rifle the vehicle had , been spike stripped by california law enforcement and was continuing to flee at low speeds , county sheriff's office kylie this is i have got a pursuit at highway 127. uh csp has , primary my units are right behind them shots fired they are behind a dark-colored possibly mazda . green laser with a right with a possible ar-15 unknown for sure on that all right then they're coming into our area they wanted me to advise you just in case yes ma'am the night county , sheriff's office set up an administrative roadblock with patrol vehicles just inside , the state line to prevent the suspect from entering trump and continuing his crime spree the , pursuit continued into nevada nye county where the vehicle ultimately approached the roadblock , and stopped several feet away approximately 12 46 a.m negotiations were attempted with subjects in the vehicle via pa announcements from the california side until 0 1 50 am one hour approximately but the subjects were not responsive the . night county sheriff's office swat team moved to the location of the vehicle with the . armored bearcat the swat team attempted to contact via pa announcements and that was also unsuccessful the swat team used distractionary devices and launched cs gas under the vehicle in , an attempt to gain compliance but the occupants of the vehicle were not responsive after several , minutes of commands and less than lethal attempt the swat team utilized the bearcat to approach . the vehicle as the deputies approached the vehicle the male subject in the back seat of the . vehicle raised a shotgun and aimed it at deputies three ncso deputies returned fire striking the male occupant there was a female occupant in the front seat she was not struck by gunfire but . sustained injuries from the glass breaking on the vehicle i will show you the dash camera footage
from the vehicles utilized in the roadblock i will show you the body worn camera footage ready ready hang out on my back on my back ready shots fired shots fired shots fired get her out ready ready hang out they got their hands pants the suspect in this ois is clem mero age 28 of . saint petersburg florida merrill has no criminal history mero received medical attention at , the scene by trump valley fire and rescue and was transported to university medical center , where he's in stable condition mero was booked in absentee on seven counts of assault . with a deadly weapon on a peace officer an account of resisting a public officer with a firearm california agencies will be submitting for an arrest warrant for the crimes committed in , california the second suspect in this ois is jade hughey 32 of tampa florida huge has no criminal history he received medical attention at the scene and was transported to desert view , hospital and later to university medical center and she is in stable condition huge will be charged with resisting a public officer with a firearm accessory to commit a crime california , agencies will be submitting an arrest warrant for the crimes committed in california after the . shooting it was discovered that there was a draco sks nine millimeter pistol on the floor outside the driver's side door on the ground that appeared to have fallen after the female . was removed from the vehicle in the back seat where the male suspect was laying was located a , mossberg shotgun partially on the center console between the driver and the passenger seat one slug in the chamber and four buckshot in the magazine lieutenant mcrae deputy amadaras and , deputy huggins are on paid leave for swain ii standard protocol the nevada state police , are conducting the investigation into the officer involved shooting we would like to thank the nevada state police highway patrol and investigators california highway , patrol inyo county sheriff's office and parramp valley fire rescue for their help during this incident thank you.
