Mauricio Pochettino heaped praise on Raheem Sterling who launched his bid to be Chelsea’s top scorer this season with a two-goal display against Luton.

Sterling continued his impressive start to the campaign with his double and also fired in the cross which Nicolas Jackson converted to open his Chelsea account as the Stamford Bridge side secured their first competitive win of the Pochettino era.

Sterling had an underwhelming debut campaign at Chelsea following his £47.5m move from Manchester City but has hit the ground running this time around.

Pochettino said: ‘He deserves the full credit for his performance. I’m so pleased for him because he told me that it was a difficult season for him last season and I’m very pleased when the player is happy and when an offensive player can score and assists, for us it’s the best feeling.’

Sterling said: ‘It’s a target I had to set myself [being Chelsea’s top scorer this season], it’s something I know I can do. If I’m 100% at something, I know what I can do and that’s what I’m doing this year, just 100% focus on scoring goals and helping my team. I want to get back to being obsessed with football.’

Striker Jackson’s goal was a deserved reward for a hard-working display from the £32m summer arrival and Pochettino said: ‘He’s amazing. It’s difficult to find a player like him in the market, difficult to see in other teas. For me he has the potential to be one of the great strikers in the Premier League. Only he needs time and not to rush with him.’

Luton manager Rob Edwards said: ‘We don’t like losing but I can accept it with a performance like that. We just came up a bit short in key moments in both boxes. When our fans are clapping us off at the end of the game like that I’m proud to represent this club.’
