Reports suggest Raphael Varane could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Varane was replaced at half-time as United were shell shocked by Steve Cooper’s side, with the visitors going into the interval leading 2-1.

Though goals from Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes would complete United’s comeback in the second-half, the status of Varane’s injury remained a cause for concern following the clash.

Erik ten Hag suggested after the game that the decision to substitute the Frenchman was a precautionary one, but it appears that Varane’s injury may be worse than first thought.

According a report from Sky Sports, Varane could potentially be out for up to six weeks.

The report also suggests that United’s reluctance to allow Harry Maguire to depart the club this summer is in part due to the uncertainty regarding Varane’s upcoming availability.

The World Cup winner has started all three of the club’s Premier League fixtures thus far this season, netting the winner as his side secured a narrow win over Wolves on the opening weekend.

Varane joins Mason Mount and Luke Shaw as members of Ten Hag’s side not available when United face Arsenal on Sunday, with the defender absent from pictures of training on Tuesday.

Mount has been unavailable since picking up an injury in the club’s defeat to Tottenham, and is expected to return following next month’s international break.

Shaw meanwhile could be out until November, with the club currently in the market for defensive reinforcements with the England international’s usual understudy Tyrell Malacia also unavailable through injury.
